Be it known that I, HERBERT L. THOMP- SON, of Walthannin the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Desks, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in. which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved desk, a portion of the body being broken away to show the driving mechanism of the sewing-machine; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the sewing-machine in position for use; Fig. 3, an end elevation, the top of the desk being tipped back; Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section taken on line a; a: in Fig. 1, aiidFig. 5 sectional views showing certain details of construction.

Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates to means for combining a sewing-machine and its treadle mechanism with a desk of the class ordinarily known as roll-top desks; and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simple, convenient, and effective device of this character for ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.

In the drawings, A represents the body proper of the desk; B, the upper case; 0, the rolling top or cover, and D the sewing-machine.

The body A is provided with an ordinary table or top, m, supported by side cases in'the usual manner, one of said cases, 13, being provided with a tier of drawers, cc, and the other, v, with a false front, 10, as shown in Fig. 2.

The upper case, B, is hinged at the rear to the table portion m, and is adapted to be turned back or down against the body A, so that its bottom I) will be in the same plane with the table 071, as shown in Fig. 3. The

case B is provided with pigeon-holes d f and an open space, g, between said pigeon-holes of a size adapted to receive the sewing-ma chine D when not in use, said pigeon-holes being closed by sliding doors h 2', (see Fig. 2,) which are adapted to be brought together and conceal the machine, at the same time opening the pigeon-holes, as shown in Fig. 1. Two wings or side pieces, 15, are hinged to the front of the case B, and are provided with hooks 25, by which they may be secured in position on the body A, said case being also provided with a series of drawers, 35, above the pigeon-holes cl f.

The rolling top or cover 0 is composed of connected slats, and is fitted to slide in the case B and side pieces, 15, in,the usual manner.

An ordinary sewing-machine, D, is secured to a carriage, 55, composed of connected slats in substantially the same manner as the top of an ordinary rolling-top desk, said carriage being fitted to slide closely in openings 65, (see Fig. 5,) formed in the table m, a guard, 13, being secured across the top of theippenin g 2 below said carriage.

Narrow guide-rolls 75 for the carriage 55 are journaled: at each side of the opening 2 below the'openings 65. To each end of the carriage 55 is secured an elastic strap, 95, the opposite ends of said straps being fastened to the-guard 13, said straps being employed to draw the ends of the carriage around or under said rolls as it is moved, as best seen in Fig. 5.

A machinetreadle, 14, is secured in the footopening a to a shaft, 24, journaled in the body A, said shaft extending through the case 2;,

(see Fig. 1,) where a rocking arm, 34, pro- 9 vided with a wrist-pin, 12, is secured to it.

An ordinary driving-wheel, 44, is secured on a crank-shaft, 54, journaled in the bodyA within the case '0 and slightly at the rear of the center thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, said 95 crank-shaft'being connected with the Wristpin 12 of the rocking arm 34 by a pitman-rod, 64. (See Fig.1.)

A driving-belt, 74, is disposed on the driving-wheel 44 and wheel 84 on the machine D, in the usual manner, and passes through a slot, 94, (see Fig. 5,) in the carriage 55.

In the use of my improvement, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, if now it is desired to use the machine D, the sliding doors 72 1' are pushed back over the pigeonholes (If. (See Fig. The machine is then drawn forward, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, by means of the carriage 55, the front end of which descends into the opening 5, and is drawn around the front roll, '75, by the clastic strap 95, and wound around the front roll, 75. of the center, described, and the machine D passes the center on its way to the front. The driving-belt 7i will be tightened on the wheels it and Si in a manner that will be readily understood by all conversant wit-h such matters without a more explicit description. 3y unfastening the wings 15 and turning the top case, B, back against the body A a broad table for holding the work as it passes through the sewing-machine is formed. (See Fig. 3.) To close the desk, the case B is turned upward on the bodyA, and the wings 15 secured thereto by the catches 25, the carriage 55 being then pushed backward until the machine D is within the space 9 between the pigeon-holes ("I f, after which the doors 7b 2' are closed, (see Fig. 1,) thus entirely concealing the machine and enabling the desk to be utilized for ordi nary purposes. The front 10 of the case c of the body A maybe hinged, if desired, so that the running parts of the machine therein may be readily lubricated.

In a desk of the character described, the combination of a body provided with a footspace, drawers on one side of said space and a case on the opposite side thereof, a case hinged to said body, wings hinged to said case and adapted to be secured to said body, a rolling cover in said case, a rolling carriage in the top of said body, asewing-machine secured to said carriage and adapted. to be concealed in said case, and treadle mechanism for said machine disposed in the case in said body in such a manner that said machine may ease, substantially as set forth.
