BOOK-MARKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 400,417, dated March 26, 1889. Application filed May 4 1888- Serial No. 272,850- (No model.)
' having one or more markers loosely strung thereon, so as to be capable of being arranged between any desired leaves of the book.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing one form of my invention in which I employ a clip to be clasped upon the cover of the book; Fig. 2, an edge view of the clip. Fig. 3 illustrates another form of fast-.
ening device, consisting of a gummed tag of paper or cloth, to which the cord carrying the markers is attached. Fig. 4 shows a fastening device upon each end of the cord, and Fig. 5 shows one form of the marker applied to a book.
' The clip a (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5) is of metal, and on the wing which comes against the inner side of the book-cover a burr, b, may be formed by puncturing the metal. The cord 0 may be fastened in the clip by knotting its end and passing it through an aperture therein. Any number of markers, (1, made of card-board or other material, may be loosely strung upon the cord, the outer end of which is knotted to prevent its withdrawal. In Figs. 3 and 4 the fastening device is shown as made of paper or muslin, the untwisted spread end of the cord being secured between the two layers. forming the tag, as, shown by the dotted lines. One side of the tag is gummed, as indicated by the shade-lines, so that it may be stuck to the inside of the cover or to the fly-leaf of the book. Fig. 4 shows a fastening device upon each end of the cord, so that it may be secured to both covers of the book.
The manner of making the fastening device may of course be varied.
The markers may be secured to the books at the bindery in any suitable manner. They will in no way interferewith packing or handling.
I claimas my invention- 1. The combination of a book and a bookmarker consisting of a flexible cord-attached to the book at or near its upper end and adapted to be arranged transversely across the top of the book, and having one or more markers loosely strung thereon and adapted to be arranged between the leaves of the book, substantially as set forth.
- 2. The combination of the book and a bookmarker consisting of a flexible cord having markers loosely strung thereon and provided with a fastener attached to the book at or near its upper end, said flexible cord being adapted to be arranged transversely across the top of the book, and said markers being adapted to be arrangedbetween the leaves of the book, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
