FISHERMANS` PAIL.

SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,588, dated April 2, 1889.

Application filed October 18, 1887.

Be it known that we, CHARLES F. MEYER# ter, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and use# ful Improvement in Fishermens Pails; and we do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and'exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application.

Our improvement relates to receptacles for holding minnows and other fish, and is de-` signed for iishermens use, the object being to provide a receptacle in which the minnows can be kept alive without constantly changing the water, and which when not in use can be folded in compact space, so as to be carried in the pocket or in an ordinary fishbasket.

Our invention consists in the construction and arrangement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

, To this end our invention consists, essentially, in the combination of a collapsible or folding frame and a iiexible covering for the more fully described and definitely claimed.

In the drawings, Figure I is a central vertical section of one form of the receptacle. Fig.l 2 is a perspective view of the collapsible or folding frame divested of the flexible covering. Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. I,

but showing another form of the receptacle.

Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. l., showing a modication. Fig. l5 is a vertical section of Fig. 4 in the closed or folded condition. Fig. 6 is anenlarged vertical section of one corner of Fig. 4C. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the device having the frame made in two folding sections for holding large fish.

A indicates the collapsible spring-frame, and B the flexible reticulated covering. The frame is made to be collapsed or to be closed in compact form when not in use, so as to be carried inl the pocket. It may be made in a variety of ways. In Fig. I it is shown as 4made of two head-rings, a a, and connecting spring wires or rods b b. The natural spring of the Wires will throw the rings apart and cause the frame to stand upright. To collapse or fold it, the upper Iring is simply turned axially, as indicated by the arrow,

The iiexible covering B consists simply of a bag that incloses and covers the frame, being made to fopen and close at the top by any suitable means, that shown in Figs l and 3 being a puckering-spring like that of an ordinary bag. The covering maybe made of any flexible material that will hold the fish and will, allow the passage of water, and at the same time will fold with the frame. Network is shown in the drawings. Common cloth will answer the purpose. The fish are simply placed in the receptacle and hung over the side of the boat in the water, in which case they will always remain lively and active, and will require no changing or other attention, as they do where they are kept in an ordinary close pail.

When not in use, the device can be folded so compactly as to be carried in the pocket'or in an ordinary fish-basket. By this means a fisherman can carry his minnow-pail with him without trouble, and is not inconvenienced as he is when compelled to carry an ordinary pail. y

In Figs. 4 and 5 the same arrangement is used as in Fig. 1, with the addition of sheet metal heads o d at top and bottom, the same being hanged and shutting together, like a blacking-box, ywhen the device is closed, as shown in Fig. 5. In such case the springwires and the flexible covering fold compactly inside t-he box, which thus presents a smooth exterior. The upper head is provided with a bail, f, and a hinged cover, g, by which means IOO ently; but all fold in Aone compact body. In v such case intermediate rings, a', (one or more,) are used, with which the wires of the con` tiguous sections engage. The whole is covered by the flexible covering before described, and the lianged heads shown in Fig. 4 may or may not be used, as desired.

In order to remove the receptacle from the Water and carry it in the boat in moving from one place to another, and at the Sametime retain Water in the receptacle, a rubber or other water-tight bag is used which is drawn over the receptacle. This rubber bag is indicated by the exterior dotted line, 7c, in Figs. 1 and 4C.

Having described our invention, We do not claim a liexible net With a ioating cover placed in a common bucket; but What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a isherinans pail, the combination of a spring-frame consisting of heads and spring- Wires connecting them, and a liexible reticulated covering to said frame, the Whole forming a receptacle that can be collapsed by turning` the upper head axially, as shown and described, and for the purpose specilied.

2. In a tishermans pail, the combination of a spring-frame consisting of heads and spring- Wires connecting them, and a fieXible reticulated covering to said frame, the heads being constructed with iianges, so that when the device is collapsed said heads will shut together in box form, as herein shown and described.

3. In a ishermans pail, the combination of a spring-frame composed of two or more sections, each consisting of heads and springwires connecting them, and each folding independently, and a flexible reticulated covering to said frame, the whole forming a receptacle that can be collapsed by turning each section axially, thewhole folding in compact form, as herein shown and described.

4. In a sherlnans pail, the combination of a collapsible spring-frame, a iiexible covering inclosing the frame, and'a Water-proof bag inclosing both the frame and covering, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
