SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,918, dated August 13, 1889. Application filed March '7, 1889, Serial No. 302,283- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD MEYER, of Ahnapee, in the county of Kewaunee and State of Wisconsimhave invented a new and Improved Siphon, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to siphons, the object of the invention being to provide a siphon which may be readily charged, and which when in use will delivery a steady heavy stream.
To the end named the invention consists of a siphon constructed as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation of my improved siphon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the conical packing-ring, and Fig. 3 is aview of the gate or valve by means of which the lower end of the long leg of the siphon is closed.
In the drawings, represents the short leg of the siphon, in which there is mounted a piston 11, that is provided with a flap-valve 12. To this piston 11 there is connected a 'stem 13, which extends outward through a cap 14, that is screwed to the top of the leg 10, a packingring being interposed between the upper edge of the leg and the under surface of the cap. The stem 13 carries a conical packing-ring 16, made of any proper soft material. The long leg of the siphon, which is shown at 17, carries a gate or valve 18 of ordinary construction.
This siphon is intended more especially for use in cheese-factories, although, of course, it might be used in many other ways.
In operation the short leg of the siphon is placed in a vatsuch as the one shown at and the piston is reciprocated through the medium of its stem, short strokes being preferably taken; then as soon as the liquid flows out through .the cap 14 the stem 13 is raised until the packing-ring 16 closes the opening a, through which the stem extends; then if the gate 18 be opened liquid will be delivered from the long leg of the siphon and the stream maintained until the contents of the vat have been drawn ofi. To facilitate the pumping action, I mount a flap-valve 19, as shown in Fig. 1, and in order that a proper suction may be maintained I provide the lower end of the leg 10 with a supportingframe 21.
The siphon above described may be kept sweet and clean by pumping water through it after each use, as above described.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A siphon consisting in the long leg having a valve at its lower end, and a short leg 10, having an open frame 21 on its lower end, upward-opening valve 19 in its lower end, and an apertured cap at its upper end, the piston 11 having an upward-opening valve 12, a stem 13 extending up through the apertured cap, and a packing-ring 16 on the stem between its ends and within the short leg, substantially as set forth.
