SELECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,002, dated October 1, 1889.

Be it known that I, FRANK C. SCHROEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraper Attachments for Brooms, Brushes, ctc.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved scraper attachment for brooms, brushes, dec., and has for its object the production of a simple device capable of easy adjustment to a broom or other analogous handle to be used as a scraper.

The invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanyingdrawings, which form part ot' this specification, Figure l represents a plan view of a blank before bending, from which my improved scraper is formed; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the completed article; Fig. 8, the device applied toa handle Fig. 4, a similar view showing the scraper removed from its working position; and Fig. 5 represent-s a modiiication of handle to facilitate the lowering of the scraper.

Reference being had to the drawings and the letters' thereon, A indicates the angular blade of the scraper; B and C, spring sides of a sleeve or socket intended to encircle the upper end of a broom or other handle to retain the scraper thereon when in use; D, an angular slot formed in the edge of sleeve C for engagement with a screw or pin E in the handle, which, when thus engaged, locks the device securely in a working position.

The scraper is made of sheet metal by first stamping a blank of the configuration shown in Fig. l and then bending the same into the form shown in Fig. 2, thus producing the completed article, which is adj usted on a handie as follows: A screwEhaving been placed in the upper part of the handle to be used, the spring sides B C of the scraper are forced over the upper end. of said handle, the rounded corners ct b aiding in the operation. This movement is continued until the channel c between the sides B C conducts the screwhead E to the entrance of angular slot D in the side C. The scraper is then turned sharply to the left until the screw comes in contact with the wall d. of said slot, when the entire device is again forced down, bringing the screw E into the extreme upper end ot' angular slot D, where it remains, and the scraper is in a locked position. lVhen used on a broom-handle and not in use as a scraper, it maybe removed from its position on the end of said handle by iirst unlocking by a reverse mpvement from that which locked it. Having been thus freed, the spring sides B C will yield sufficiently to allow the whole device to be slid down the handle a convenient distance, where it may remain, as shown by dotted lines in FigzC and modification, Fig. 5. In thelatter iigure the handle is shown with an enlargement or head at its outer end, upon which the socket of the scraper tits. By this construction the scraper will slide down the handle easily out of the way of the hands ot' the person using the broom.

The scraper having been constructed as described, its operation is quite obvious, and therefore need not be dwelt upon at length. It is intended to be put to anyand all uses to which a scraping implement can be applied.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim isl. As an improved article of manufacture, a sheet-metal scraper having an expansible and contractible socket on one side of and parallel with the blade and open at both ends, substantially as described.

2. As an improved article ot manufacture, a sheet-n1etal scraper having an angular front end and an expansible and contractible socket on one side of and parallel with the blade and open on one side and both ends, substantially as described.

3. As an improved article of manufacture, a sheet-metal scraper having a socket open on one side and at both ends and provided with 95 a. slot in the wall of the socket, substantially as described.
