RECEPTACLE FOR RETAILING NAILS.

To all whom it nwty concern.-

Be it known that we, JOHN G. PEACE, EL- BRIDGE L. DYE, and ISAAC DYE, all of Salem, in the county of Dent and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Receptacles for Retailing Nails, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This device in its most perfect form consists in a receptacle having an inclined bottom with a discharge-orifice made in the front side at the lower part of the bottom. A forked gate is arranged to drop down and prevent the escape of nails from the orifice.

The cases may be most cheaply and compactly made with a number side by side, as seen in Fig. I, the interior side walls 1 in such case serving as divisions between the compartments. We will describe, however, a single case, with the understanding that any desired number may be built together side by side. The side wall is marked 1, the rear wall 2, and the front wall 3. The bottom l is inclined downward toward the front, so as to cause the nails to slip toward the discharge-orifice 5. The inclination is not, however, so steep as to cause the nails to slip through the orifice, unless some force is applied to them by a person to move them forward. At 6 are boards placed in an inclined position at the side of the bottom, so as to avoid square corners, which might interfere with the forward movement of the nails along the bottom 4:.

7 is a forked drop-gate sliding in a space between the front wall 3 and a strip 8. The tines 9 of the gate, when down, rest upon the extension or spout 10 of the bottom 4, and thus close the orifice 5, always penetrating more or less the mass of nails and forming an effectual check, which may be applied or withdrawn with a very small amount of force. When the gate is raised, it may be held up by a pin 11, projecting from the front wall and engaging in a hole 12 of the gate. The cover 13, in the form shown in Figs. I and III, is hinged to the back wall, and may be thrown back into an inclined position, as seen in Fig. III, resting in such case on bracket or brackets 14 upon the cover or body of the recepta cle. In this position it forms a chute, down which the nails are poured from a nail-keg, which is placed upon the lid and the top edges of the box.

It is intended that each of the receptacles shall hold at least one keg of nails. We, however, do not limit ourselves as to size in the receptacles.

V In the modification shown in Fig. IV the receptacle is 'built beneath the counter 15 and a part of the counter front the cover of each receptacle, the said cover 13 being hinged to the body of the counter at 16.

It will be understood without further explanation that the device is adapted for the reception of nails from the kegs and their removal from the receptacle with a minimum amount of manipulation.

We claim as our invention-- 1. The receptacle for retailing nails, having an inclined bottom, a discharge-orifice in the front wall at the lower part of the bottom, and a drop-gate 7, having tines 9 and adapted to close the discharge-orifice, substantially as set forth.

2. The receptacle for retailing nails, having an inclined bottom 4 6, a discharge-orifice 5, a forked drop-gate 7, and an inclined cover 13, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
