TOILET ARTICLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,527, dated November 5, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER B. GWYN, a citizen of the United States, residing atAsheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to toilet articles, and the purpose thereof is to provide a simple and convenient hand-washer capable of being instantaneously attached to and detached from a bowl or basin to enable a person deprived of the use of one arm or hand to bathe the other easily and expeditiously.

It is a further purpose of my invention to provide a simple and easily-operated clamp and support for a toilet-brush or similar toilet article, whereby the same maybe easily applied to a basin or similar receptacle and rigidly held therein to permit the application of the hand thereto.

The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and then definitely pointed out in the claims following this specification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a bowl or basin, showing the method of applying the invention thereto. Fig. 4 is a view showing a modification. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are views showing further modifications.

In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 denotes a flat strip or plate of wood, rubber, or any other suitable material and of such proportions as to adapt it to support atoiletbrush 2, which may be fastened thereon in any manner-as, for example, by a staple 3, surrounding the handle and overlying catches 4, which hold the edges of the brush. To the end of the plate 1 is attached a spring 5, bent to form a loop 6 and to bring the end 7 of the spring into close proximity to the end attached to the plate. If desired, in order to impart additional elasticity, a coil 8 may be formed in the end 7.

the bottom or opposite side of the bowl. The brush is thus supported firmly in an inclined position, where it is easily accessible to the hand.

I may apply a cloth or sponge to the plate 1 instead of the brush, and I may also attach the bristles directly to the plate, as shown in Fig. 4, in place of attaching a toiletrbrush thereto.

This device constitutes a convenient attachment to a basin in cases where the user has either lost an arm or hand, or has been temporarily deprived of the use of either hand.

I may also attach pins or pegs 9 to the strip 1, as in Figs. 5 and (5, forming in the brushbody openings 10 to engage said pins. Moreover, upon the brush-body or other foundation 2, I may apply a piece of spongio-piliue 12 or a wash-rag, as desired. I may also apply the brush or other foundation-piece 2 to the strip 1 by means of springs 14, attached at one end to the latter and having their free ends adapted to enter apertures in the strip 1, as shown in Fig. 7, said free ends resting against the under face of the strip 1. \Vith this construction pegs or pins 15 may be placed on the strip or plate to engage openings 16 in the end ofthe brush or other plate 2.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and d esire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A toilet-brush supported by a plate or strip having a spring -clamp applied to one end and adapted to engage with the margin of a toilet-basin, substantially as described.

2. A toiletbrush or sponge holder consist ing of a plate having a spring clamp at one end adapt-ed to engage the margin of the toi et-basin and provided with suitable fast enings adapted to secure the brush or sponge thereon, substantially as described.

The combination, with the plate 1, having a suitable brush, of the spring-clamp 5, having its engaging portions brought into proximity and provided with the loop 6, to receive the margin of a toilet-basin, substantially as described.
