- This invention relates to that class of sheetmetal cans in which the cover is connected with the body of the can by means of a sealing-strip soldered at its upper and lower edges to the cover and body of the can, respectively, so that by tearing away said sealingstrip the cover may be readily removed from the body.
- WVith cansof this class as heretofore constructed there has always been more or less difiiculty in starting the tearing away of the sealing-strip, inasmuch as the fingers of the operator are liable to slip upon the end of the sealing-strip. Furthermore, from the insecurity of the hold of the fingers upon the end of the sealing-strip in such cases there has been more or less liability of cutting the hand of the operator with the sharp edges of the strip.

SHEET-METAL CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,982, dated April 8, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. HIDDEN, of Short Hills, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, This invention relates to that class of sheetmetal cans in which the cover is connected with the body of the can by means of a sealing-strip soldered at its upper and lower edges to the cover and body of the can, respectively, so that by tearing away said sealingstrip the cover may be readily removed from the body. WVith cansof this class as heretofore constructed, there has always been more or less difiiculty in starting the tearing away of the sealing-strip, inasmuch as the fingers of the operator are liable to slip upon the end of the sealing-strip. Furthermore, from the insecurity of the hold of the fingers upon the end of the sealing-strip in such cases there has been more or less liability of cutting the hand of the operator with the sharp edges of the strip.
The object of my invention is to obviate this drawback to the use of such cans; and it comprises a novel means, hereinafter fully set forth and described, whereby said object is secured.
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view illustrating the general class of cans to which my said invention relates. Fig. 2 is a side view of a can constructed according to my said invention. Fig. 3 is a corresponding view of the same, but with the end of the sealing-strip thrown outward, as during the operation of starting the tearing away of the strip. Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view taken in the line w w of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective and Fig. 6 an edge view representing one modification of my invention. A is the body of the can. Bis the cover. 0 is the sealing-strip, and a 1) indicate, respectively, the upper and lower edges of said sealing-strip, which are soldered in a manner well known in the art to the cover and body, respectively, in such manner that by tearing away the strip, thus rupturing the frangible soldered joints between the strip and the cover and body, said cover is detached or made detach able from said body. Said strip 0 is provided with an extension 0, which is sufliciently free to permit it to be grasped by the fingers, and which, when drawn away from the cover B and body A, tends to strip the sealing-strip therefrom.
I so construct the extension 0 that it shall have a corrugated or positive roughened surface, whereby saidextension maybe grasped by the hand or thumb and fingers with a much more secure and firm grip than is possible with a smooth surface on said extension.
The extension 0 may be corrugated transversely, as represented in Figs. 5 and 6, or it may be roughened with diamondshaped points, as represented in Figs. 7 and 8. The corrugations or roughened surface may be formed by subjecting the material to the action of suitable dies; but any suitable form of corrugation or roughening may be adapted so longas the same provides a corrugated or roughened surface to insure a firmer grip upon said extension 0 than is afforded simply.

What I claim as my invention is' Thecombination, with the bodyAand cover B, of the soldered sealing-strip C, having a corrugated or roughened part c to facilitate the removal of said strip from said body and cover, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
