UNITED STATES .PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGEl POGGENBURG, OF NEWr YORK, N. Y.
GAME.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 425,249, dated April 8, 1890.
Application iiledlloveniber 12,1889. Serial No. 330,070. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE POGGENBURG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in games, and more particularly to a game in which a game-board. of peculiar construction is made use of, such construction of board being hereinafter fully described, the game itself being one which I fancifully term a game of Give and take. l
In order to fully describe my invention, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Figure l, a top plan View of a board constructed in accordance with my invention, and in Fig. 2 a longitudinal section view taken on the line x a; of Fig. l.
'The board upon which the game is played, and which I have illustrated bythe abovementioned drawings, is preferably structed of thin wood', it being obvious, however, that the same may be constructed of card-board, papier-mache, sheet metal, or of any other desired material, A being the baseboard,`having the liange a passing entirely around its outer edge, in order to prevent the marbles or similar articles used in the game from rolling off or falling from the said board A.
I prefer, as is shown in the drawings, to construct one end of the board somewhat larger, both in breadth and thickness, than the Opposite end, and provide such enlarged end with pockets, the latter being either hollowedout of the wood or other material of which the base A is constructed, or, in lieu thereof, such enlarged end of the base Amay be provided with holes, and have secured thereto pockets made 'of netting, wood, fabric, or other desired material. The outer pockets are made somewhat smaller than the central pocket B, it being the object to protect the central or larger pocket B by the smaller surrounding ones, the four smaller corner pockets l) being designated give pockets, and the four inner pockets h being designated take pockets. This board, constructed as above described, may of course be made of any size or dimensions, and, if desired, made in two sections hinged, as shown, in order that it may be folded up and conveniently carried or transported. The top of the board A may be covered with oil-cloth or other material, but of course, if desired, may be left unprotected and polished.
The game to be played in connection with this board maybe described as follows: Each person in the party engaged in the game is If, however, a person rolls the marble into' either of the four pockets marked take, such person takes from the larger or central pocket one forfeit, or more if such has been so prearranged. A person succeeding in get ting the marble into the central pocket B takes the entire contents of the pocket.
I would have it understood'that I do not limit my invention to any particular shape or dimensions of the board, nor of the inaterial of which it may be constructed, nor of the number of pocketsv formed therein, nor should .my claim be. limited to the use of marbles, as it is obvious that the board may be constructed of such a size as to be capable of being used in connection with billiardballs or with hollow spheres, and, further, it is obvious that the forfeit. may be of any kind or character.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The gamelof Give and take hereinbefore described, in connection and to be played with a board constructed with the base A, provided near one end with the larger central forfeit-pocket B, andwith the outer smaller'corner pockets l), marked or designated give, and with the inner smaller pockets h', marked or designated take, said board to be used in connection with marbles or like articles.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 11th day of November, A. D, 1889.
