To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD RAU, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Ventilating- Shoe, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in hoot-s and shoes; and the object of my invention is to provide a shoe so constructed that a ventilation will he given thereto from the lower portion of the shoe. I attain this object hy means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-' Figure l is a plan showing the inner sole of the shoe. Fig. 2 is a section along the line 1 l of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.

lt is a Well-known fact that many people are troubled with profuse perspiring of the feet, especially when wearing heavy winter shoes or boots. In order to prevent this disagreeable and unhealthy occurrence, l have provided a means for allowing a circulation of air beneath the sole of the foot. For this purpose l puncture the inner sole c of the shoe, forming a series of apertures b extending around the inner sole from the toe to the heel. Along the outer edge of the inner sole the upper is attached in the usual manner, and a strip of leather C is secured to the inner sole around the shoe from toe to heel, and in the center of the inner sole is secured the strip G', extending` from toe to heel, leaving a narrow groove or channel c, into which the holes b open. municate with the outer surface of the shoe hy means of the grooved strip H, attached to the upper just above the heel, and provided with a longitudinal groove on the side, placed I cause the channel c to conlin contact with the upper, said groove placed in connection with the channel at the heel, the grooved strip H being bifurcated at one end and attached to the shoe on each side of the channel. As thus arranged the air will circulate through the opening in the heelpiece into the channel c, and from thence through the apertures Z9 to the interior of the shoe. I attach the sole D and heel E in the usual manner.

As thus constructed my shoe is light and' flexible, and having the piece C attached to the inner sole makes it unnecessary to have so heavy a shank as is usually placed in the instep of a shoe. The expense of making the shoe is not augmented to any appreciable eX- tent, and the value of the shoe to the user is greatly increased. Perspiring of the feet is avoided and the object for which the invention is made is attained.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a shoe, a perforated inner sole havinga narrow strip of leather C attached to its lower surface, and extending around thesole near the edge, and also having' a strip of leather C placed in thecenter of the lower surface of said sole, extending from heel to toe, forming achannel entirely around the shoe, the perforations in said inner sole opening into the channel c between the two strips C and C', with the hifurcated grooved strip l-l, att-ached to the outer side of the upper just above the heel, the groove in said strip H communicating With the channel c, all substantially as described.
