UNITED STATES IVILLIAM RINEHOLD,
OF DANBURY, IOWA.
STAY-CHAIN FOR WHIFFLETREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,114, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed February 8, 1890. Serial No. 339,640. I (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM RINEHOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dan bury, in the county of VVoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Stay and Bracing Chain for VVhiflietrees, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates "to improvements in stay and bracing chains for whiiiletrees.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be secured near the ends of the doubletree to limit the motion of the latter and prevent the same being broken or twisted from its proper position when subjected to a heavy strain.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the'accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied in operative position to a doubletree. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail viewof one of the blocks. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of connecting the ends of the sections of the transverse bar that is arranged between the thill-couplings.
Refering to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a vehicle-tongue, which, is constructed in the ordinary manner and provided at its rear end with a curved cross-piece 2, that is braced by bars 3 and 4:, which are arranged at the sides of the tongue and are connected are arranged upon each side of the tongue and are provided at their rear ends with loops 141 and are connected to a transversely-arranged bar 15 by chains 16 and 17, which pass over pulleys 18, that are mounted in blocks 19, secured to the axle. The blocks 19 are provided with parallel flanges 20, which are arranged upon each side of the thill-couplings and are pivoted thereto by the coupling-bolts. By this construction the ends of the doubletree are connected, and the strain upon one is readily communicated to the other end and equalized, and the doubletree is prevented being broken or displaced when subjected to a heavy strain. The transversely-arranged bar 15 is composed of sections 21, which are provided at their ends with loops 22, constructed similarly to the loop 14 of the parallel bars 13. The loops 14: and 22 engage the sides of the block 19, and thereby limit the motion of the doubletree and dispense with the ordinary stay-chains. The adjacent ends of the sections 21 of the transversely-arranged bar 15 are reversely threaded and are connected by a turn-buckle or nut 23, which has right and left hand screw-threads to engage the ends of the sections 21 to tighten or loosen the same and regulate the tension of the rods and chain.
I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, as I may without departing from the spirit of my invention make minor changes therein, such as employing a continuous chain or a rope to connect the ends of the doubletree, and in this case stops or projections are provided to engage the blocks and limit the motion of the doubletree.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings it will readily be seen that the device is simple and inexpensive in construction, adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary whifiletree, and is capable of equalizing the strain and preventing the whiffletree being displaced under a heavy strain, and is capable of limiting the-movement of the Whiffletree and dispensing with the stay-chains.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with a doubletree, of the pulleys arranged near the end of an axle, and the rods and chains secured to the whiffletree and passing around the pulleys, and
being provided with stops adapted to engage the pulleys and limit the motion of the doubletree, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with awhiffletree, of the blocks pivoted to the thill-couplings and provided with pulleys, the parallel rods 13, connected to the whiffietree, the transverse rod 15, arranged between the pulleys, and the chains 16 and 17, passing around the pulleys and connecting the parallel rods with the transverse rod, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a whiiiletree, of the blocks pivoted to the thill-couplings and provided with pulleys, the parallel rods 13, connected to the Whiffletree, the transverse rod arranged between the pulleys and composed of sections having their ends threaded, the turn-buckle engaging the adjacent ends of the said sections, and the chains passing over the pulleys and connecting the parallel rods with the transverse rod, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a Whi'ffletree, of
the parallel rods connected to the ends of the whifiietree and provided at their rear ends" with loops, the transverse rod composed of sections and provided at the farther ends with loops, the chains connecting the rods, and the blocks provided with pulleys and adapted to receive the chains and be engaged by said loops to limit the motion of the said whiffletree, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a Whiffletree, of the blocks pivoted to the axle and provided with pulleys, the parallel rods 13, connected to the whiflietree, the adjustable transverse rod 15, arranged between the pulleys, and'the chains 16 and 17 passing-around the pulleys and connecting the parallel rods with the transverse rod, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as iny own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM RINEHOLD. Witnesses:
SAMUEL BAYER, JOSEPH OD OHERTY.
