Description

J. W. WILLEFORD.
POLIGEMANS CLUB.
Patented Dec. 9, 1890.
(No Modei.)
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH \V. \VILLEFORD, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
POLICEMANS CLUB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,470, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed November 30, 1889- Serial No. 332,167- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W.W1LLEF0RD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Policemans Club; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention belongs to that class of defensive weapons commonly known as policemans club.
Its object is to provide a weapon which can not be wrested from the hand of the officer, or in case it is attempted the officer maysurrender the case, while he retains the more effective club in his own hand, and in case the offender shall again attempt to snatch the club, he can wrest only the sheath from the officer and leave the officer a drawn dagger.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, with the aid of which I will describe it.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal crosssect-ion of the club, showing the club A with its interior club B inserted therein, also showing the dagget or knife C in the inner club. The club A is revoluble and detachably mounted on the handle M, and is superimposed upon the club B. The club B is revoluble, and also detachably mounted on the handle M, and is superimposed upon the knife or dagger G. The knife or dagger Cis contained within the club B, and is revoluble therein and detachable therefrom. It is rigidly mounted on thehandle M, as shown.
I construct the outer club A preferably of wood. This is hollow and capable of receiving the club I3, as shown. In the bottom of this hollow I insert a grip or clasp to hold the interior club in place. This I construct as shown in the drawings. On a block of any suitable material I fasten, on the opposite sides thereof, springs II II, by means of the screws J J. This is held in the body of the exterior club by means of the screw F. The block, as shown in the drawings at G, is not in contact with the bottom of the cavity. This permits it to be tightened, in case of necessity, by further driving of the screw F.
The interior club b, (shown at Figs. 2 and 3,) I construct, preferably, of metal. At the extremityof this I construct a finial. (Shown at I.) The recess there shown is designed to furnish a hold when it is inserted in the hollow of the club A. The clasps of the springs H H spring around the swell of the finial I and hold it against ordinary force, but releasing it when a quick strong pull is exerted. It also acts as a swivel when the club is held by the handle M. The club may be revolved on the handle, so thatin case an offender should attempt to twist it in the hands of the officer it would revolve.
ithin the inner club B, I construct a hollow in which I insert a knife-blade or dagger C. This is held in place in the club, the latter acting as a sheath, by means of the springs K K, as shown in the drawings. It will be observed that the knife cannot be withdrawn from its sheath when the latter is in the interior of the club A. As is shown at K, Fig. 1, the springs K K are held by the outer case. Vhen the club Bis withdrawn from the club A and the knife C is in its case l3,the springs K K grasp the handle in the notch under said springs and hold it from ordinary force; but in case it is sharply and strongly pulled the springs will release the knife.
The operation of this implement is as follows: In case an offender attempts to wrest the club from the officer by a twist the case A will revolve. In case he attempts to jerk it from the officers hand the springs II II will yield and the officer holds the interior club, while the offender has the shell. In case the olfender shall a second time attempt to wrest the club B from the officer it will revolve on the joint formed bythe springs K K. In case it is jerked the case will come off and leave the knife 0, drawn, in the hands of the oiiicer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A polieemans club consisting of theclub A, revolubly and detachably mounted on the handle M, having a second or interior club B contained therein, said interior club B being also revolubly and detachably mounted on the handle M, said club also having in its interior the dagger C, revoluble therein and dc- IOO taehable therefrom, and rigidly mounted on I detachable only one afte the Otl1e1','sul)stz1l1- the handle M, all acting together in the mantially as shown and described. I 10 net and for the purposes specified. In testimony whereof I affix 1nys1g11ut11re 111 2. A policemans club consisting of a knife presence of two Witnesses. 01' dagger rigidly mounted upon a handle, having one or more clubs in the form of sheaths severally revoluble and detaehably' superimposedl hereon, one over the 0l}l161,11ll
