Description

(No Model.)
H. E. LEEMAN.
CARPET PASTBNER. No. 447,960. Patented Mar. 10., 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE E. LEEMAN, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY A. MORTON, OF SAME PLACE.
CARPET-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,960, dated March 10, 1891.
Application filed December 6, 1890. Serial No. 373,747. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORACE E. LEEMAN,of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Fasteners, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention has forits object to provide means whereby a carpet may be fastened in place on a floor along a doorway or threshold in such manner that it can be easily and quickly removed Without the removal of the fastening devices and without liability of tearing or injuring the carpet; and to this end the invention consists in the improvements which I5 I will now proceed to describe and claim.
The accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, represents a sectional view of a portion of the floor adjoining a doorsill or threshold, showing my improved devices for fastening the carpet across the doorway.
In carrying out my invention I provide for the fastening of carpets across thresholds or doorways a series of sockets s and removable 2 5 devices, presently described, co-operating therewith. Said sockets are sheet-metal tubes inserted in holes bored in the floor and provided with spring catches or jaws 9 9, formed to engage grooves in the shanks of headed 0 pins or pegs t. Said pins are forced through the carpet and are caught by the spring-jaws and yieldingly held thereby with sufficient firmness to prevent accidental removal, but
permit the Withdrawal of the pins with sufficient ease to render injury to the carpet im- 3 5 possible in case it is pulled up suddenly without first Withdrawing the pins. The portions of the carpet'extending along the base-boards of the room and at all points, excepting at thresholds, may be secured by any suitable 40 devices adapted to permit the carpet to be quickly detached from the floor without inury.
The advantage of the described carpet-fastening devices in case of fire, when it is necessa-ry to remove a carpet quickly, will be ob vious.
The sockets s are preferably provided with flaring mouths or upper ends to facilitate the insertion of the tacks.
I claim The improved carpet fastening devices comprising the spring-j awed sockets s, adapted to be inserted in holes in the fioor, and the grooved headed pins 2?, formed to be yieldingly 5 5 engaged by the jaws of said sockets, as set forth.
In 'testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of November, A. D. 1890.
