Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVED-POWDER FOR FACING MOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.46,57, dated February 28, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES NICHOLS and NILLIAM BATTY, both of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Powder for Facing Molds and for other Purposes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact, description thereof and of the mode of preparing the same.
The object of our invention is a powder adapted for facing molds of sand or ofloam' to prevent the adhesion of the sand to the metal during and after the act of casting the same.
We take the hard substance or slag which incrusts the bottom and rear ends in the interior of gas-retorts, and which has the semimetallicluster and other properties of graphite. This substance we break and pulverize until it assumes the condition of an almost impalpable powder. \Ve then pass the same through a boltor sieve of wire-gauze, and havingbarreled or otherwise secured the part which has traversed the gauze for the use hereinafter explained, we return the coarser and unbolted portions to the mill until it shall have been reduced to the requisite fineness.
The powder thus composed and prepared is found to be far superior to all others, so far as known to us,for dusting the matrix or interior surfaces of sand, loam, and other like m0lds,in order to prevent adhesion of the substance of the mold to the surface of the casting. The powder is also found well adapted as a stovepolish instead of plumba-go or black-lead.
We claim herein as new and of our invention- The molders facing powder composed and prepared in the manner described.
In testimony ofwhich invention we hereunto set our hands.
JAMES NICHOLS. WM. BATTY. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, JAMES H. LAYMAN.
