Churn.
Patented April 4, 1865.

UNITED STATES ATENT @Prina SARAH E. SAUL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH E. SAUL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Churn 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention, partly in section; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to a new and i111- proved churn of that class in which a rotary dasher is employed; and it consists in a dasher of such construction, in connection with sliding covers, and also in connection with an angular cream box or receptacle, and, further, in the employment of a hand rest with a crank, as hereinafter set forth, whereby it is believed that several advantages are obtained over ordinary churns of the class speciiied.
A represents a cream-box of quadrilateral or other angular form and ot' any suitable diinensions, and B is a dash, which is a rotating one, and composed of a shaft, a, having radial arms b at its upper and lower ends, to which blades or win gs c are secured. The lower end of the shaft a is stepped in the bottom of the cream-box,and the upper end has its bearing formed by two horizontal sliding covers, C G, which work in grooves Z1X in the inner sides of the box, at its upper end, said covers when closed being retained in position by buttons d, or other suitable fastenings. The dash B is rotated by a crank, E, having a vertical handle, I), at its outer end. This handle is fitted loosely on a vertical spindle, and has, at its lower end, a horizontal disk, F, which serves as a rest or support -for the hand. The dash B extends up to the top of the box A, and, in consequence of the angular form of the latter, a great agitation of the cream is produced, causing the butter to be separated from the cream in a very short space of time, while the vertical position of the dash admits ofthe operator performing the churning operation while in the act of sitting, thereby rendering thc work far less laborious than usual, as the arms will be mostly taxed, and the working one is greatly relieved by the hand support or rest F. The cr( ambox A is designed to be of equal width or diameter from top to bottom, in order to have an equal agitation of the cream the whole height of the box.
By means of the slidingcovers G C, arranged as shown, the dash may be very readily adjusted in and removed from the cream-box, and always adjusted in a proper vertical position, no extra care or attention being required in order to effect that result.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The laterally-sliding covers G C, in combination with the dasher-shaft, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. rIhe handrest F, in combination with the crank E, substantially as andv for the purpose herein shown and described.
SARAH E. SAUL.
