J. R. JONES. PHOTOGRAPHIG ALBUM.
No. 471,387. Patented Mar'. Z2, 1892'.
A T TURNE Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA R. JONES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,387, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed October 16, 1890. Serial No. 368,270: (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA R. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Photographic Albums, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings. i
My invention consists of a photographic album having a case or casing for the leaves and a door or doors for covering said leaves, whereby the leaves may be retained in position, inclosed, and guarded, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figures land 2 represent perspective views of a photograph-album embodying my invention, the same being, respectively, in closed and open conditions. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section on line x x, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a case, which is supported upon and secured to the base B, and sustained in an inclined position, when so desired, bya prop C, which is connected with said base and the back of the case. Within thecase are photographholders D, which are in form of a book, the leaves of which are connected at bottom by strips of ieXible material or other means, as hinges, whereby they may be folded one on the other and inclosed in the case, as in Fig. 3, or unfolded toward the front, so that the photographs or pictures may be successively presented, one of the positions of the iinfolded leaves being shown in Fig. l1. Connected with the sides ot' the case are doors E, which, adapted to open laterally, serve to cover the holders D, and are provided with a catch F for fastening purposes. The inner face of the doors have photograph or picture holders G thereon, and the outer faces are ornamented with mirrors, dac., as desired. The
rear leaf is connected with the back of the case by a strip H of suitable material, as will be seen in Fig.l 8, and shown dotted in Fig-l, permitting the removal of said leaves from within the casing.
The operation is as follows: When the album is closed, as in Figs. 2 and 3, the doors are opened, whereby the holders are exposed and the leaves may be swung out, so as to present the photographs or pictures in the different leaves, as desired. The leaves may be folded and returned into the case, after which the doors are closed and fastened, whereby the leaves are retained within the *case and the album is in compact condition,
presenting the appearance of a book or easel, the interior of the same being accessible at the front through the doors E, as has been stated. It will also be seen that when the doors are opened and a leaf is unfolded the latter, which swings outwardly and downwardly, may rest on a table, dto., while the remainder of the leaves remain within the casing con-- nected therewith, by which provision at least four holders are exposed-Viz., those of the two leaves and the two doorsas will be seen in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A photograph-album consisting of a case having a base, to which it is secured in an inclined position, and laterally-opening doors hinged to its sides, outwardly and downwardly opening leaves, each adapted to hold a photograph, connected at the bottoms by flexible strips, and a exible strip connecting the lower edge of the back leaf to the inner side of the back of the case, said Iiexible strips being of sufficient size to permit the leaves of the-book to be set down and out of-the album, said parts being combined substantially as described.
