Description

(NoModL) J. HUFF 82; E.-JOHNSON.
BRACKET.
No. 479,424. Patented July 26, 1892.
ifl s i I L aegfrs 0 MW m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN I-IUFF AND ELLIS JOHNSON, OF LUSK, WYOMING.
BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,424, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed March 11, 1892. Serial No. 424,577. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN HUFF and EL- LIS JOHNSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Lusk, in the county of Converse and State of WVyoming, have invented a new and useful Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in brackets.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive bracket which will be especially adapted for supporting spring-mattresses and the like between the side rails of a bedstead and which may be readily separated to facilitate packing and storing.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bedstead provided with brackets constructed in accordance with this invention, one of the brackets being shown separated for shipping. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the bracketarms. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the plates.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 designates a bracket comprising a plate 2, adapted to be secured to a side rail 3 of a bedstead and designed to be engaged by a removable bracket-arm 4, adapted for supporting a spring-mattress in position in a bedstead. The plate 2 is secured to the side rail by screws, and is provided at its upper edge with a flange 5, extending outward and arranged to rest upon the upper edge of the side rail, and the said plate is provided with a longitudinal slot 6 and having lugs '7 arranged on opposite sides of the slot. The lugs 7 are arranged in pairs, the upper ones having their upper and lower edges inclined, as shown, and the lower ones having their upper edges inclined and their lower edges connected by an integral supporting web or flange. The bracket-arm is composed of a horizontal bar 8, a vertical bar or portion 9, and a brace 10. The vertical portion of the bracket-arm is provided with a central vertical flange 11 and lugs 12 and 13, formed integral with the flange and the vertical portion. The upper lugs 13 have their lower edges beveled to conform to the inclination of the upper lugs7 of the plate, and the lower lugs12 have both their upper and lower edges beveled. WVhen the parts are assembled, the vertical flange fits in the slot of the plate and the lugs of the plate and the bracket-arm engage one another, thereby firmly securing the parts together. The slot is slightly longer than the flange to enable the bracket-arm to be moved longitudinally of the plate to separate the parts and to bring the lugs into engagement.
It will be seen that the bracket is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and that, while it is capable of universal application, it is especially designed for supporting spring-mattresses and the like.
In shipping bedsteads provided with brackets constructed in accordance with this invention the bracket-arms may be removed and compactly secured to the inner faces of the bed-rails, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanyin g drawings, and by means of brads or light nails, as shown.
The beveling of the lugs of the plate causes them to extend upward and that of the lugs of the bracket-arm causes those lugs to extend downward, so that the lugs will readily engage one another.
hat we claim is- A bracket comprising a flat plate provided at its upper edge with a horizontal supporting-flange 5 and having a longitudinal slot intermediate of its ends and provided with outwardly and upwardly projecting lugs arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the slot and having beveled edges, the lower lugs being connected at their bottoms with a supporting-web formed integral with them, and a detachable bracketarm having a central longitudinal flange to fit into the slot and provided with integral downwardly-projecting lugs arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the flange and having beveled edges to conform to thelugs of the plate, substantially as described. I
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HUFF. ELLIS JOHNSON.
