MEANS FOR ORNAMENTING SHEET-METAL ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,837, dated September 20, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERNARD M. ABELL and WILLIE OSTRANDER, citizensof theUnited States, and residents of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Ornam enting Sheet- 7 Metal Articles, of which the following is; a
specification.
The invention relates to improvements in means for ornamenting sheet-metal articles, such as bowls, pitchers, cane-handles, and the like, which articles in the larger silverware factories are usually ornamented by snarling and other slow and tedious forms of labor.

combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed; and its object is to produce suitable apparatus whereby under the action of hydraulic pressure the plain walls of a bowl or other article may have imparted or.

Our invention pertains particularly to the vertically-reciprocating cylinder above referred to, with its attendant devices, and to the press sustaining the sectional die.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure l is a central vertical section through an apparatus constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention. Fig. *2 is a transverse section of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking downward. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of one of the followers and platens, constituting a portion of the press for maintaining the'die. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detached central vertical section through a portion of one of the followers and the means whereby it is secured to its 0 crating-screw, and Fig. 7 is a central vertica section of a bowl in the nature of a blank adapted for treatment in the die.
In the drawings, A designates the bed-plate, of the apparatus, B the top frame thereof, and O O the vertical rods or standards connecting said bed-plate Aand top frame B and having between their upper portions the transverse frame D, which supports the hydraulic jack E, of usual construction. Upon opposite sides of the lower end of the ram F of the hydraulic jack E are provided the lugs G, from which is suspended by means of the links H the plunger I, having upon its lower end the customary cup-shaped packing J. The upperend of the plunger I at opposite sides is provided with the lugs K, which correspond with the lugs G and receive the ldwer'ends of the links H, and said upper end of the plunger I is broadened to olfer an edective bearingsurface for the lower end of the ram F when the latter is depressed thereon.
It will be observed upon reference to'Fig. 1 that the length of the links II is such that the plunger I is dropped a short distance below the lower end of the ram F, and hence upon the descent of the ram and plunger the latter will be lowered upon the liquid and the former will thereafter travel downward a short'dist-ance before the full pressure of the ram is transmitted to the plunger.

At a suitable elevation above the sectional die P there is secured tothe standards C the transverse frame A, having the central vertical opening B and held in place by means of the brackets O" and screws D, the latter being adapted to enter any of the series of apertures F pr vided in the inner faces of the standards 0. The purpose of providing a series of the aperturesF is to permit theadjustment of the frame A upwardor downward, in accordance with the height of thesectional die and other circumstances. Within The the opening B in the center of the frame A and the vertical exterior grooves L, receiving the inner ends of the arms M, which arms, in connection with said grooves, insure a direct vertical movement in the cylinderJ and prevent any revolving motion thereof. The arms M are bolted to the lower surface of the frame A and will be of convenient form and size to pass below the internally-threaded sleeve G and properly engage the said grooves L, formed in the opposite sides of the cylinder J. The lower end of the cylinder J is reduced to form a threaded stem N and has the annular recess 0, which receives the angular packing P, and the upper portion of the nut Q, screwed home upon the said stem N. The formation of the packing I and nut Q is of importance, since it is essential that the liquid within the bowl inclosed in the die P be most securely held; otherwise it will escape under the actionpf the hydraulic pressure.
It will be observed upon referenccdo Figs. 1 and 5 that the lower surfaces of the nut Q taper downward and inward and that above said tapered surfaces thecnut is provided with the annular recess S to receivethe inwardly-tapering lip T of the packing P.
'VVhen the cylinder K is lowered into the die 7 P, the lower extremity thereof will enter the opening w and the nut Q and packing P will engage the flange a: of the bowl, and
when the parts are inthis position the annular lip T of the packing I will'bear against theflange w of the bowl and form a liquidtight joint. Any water risingvaround the lower end of the cylinder J and nut Q will pass beneath the annular lip T and more firmly press the same against the flange 0:, thus effectually sealing the joint and preventing all leakage. The packing P is of angular form in vertical section, as shown,
and is securely held inplace by the not Q, which is adapted to be removed and leave the packing in condition to be withdrawn when desired. I i
In the operation of the apparatus the bowl or other article it is desired to shape or ornament will be placed in the previously-prepared die and'the latter then seated upon the bed A and there securely held by the platens V, which will befirmly backed by the screws R. The bowl and die being in position, the
cylinder J willbe lowered by the rotation of and the ram of the hydraulic jack lowered, causing the descent of the plunger I through the cylinder J and upon the liquid in the bowl. .The pressure of the hydraulic jack being continued, its force, acting through the plunger I upon the liquid, will swell the walls of the bowl into the interstices of the die, and thus the bowl at a single operation will have imparted to it the form of the matrix and whatever design, whetherin intaglio or relief, the walls thereof may bear. After the bowl has thus been shaped and ornamented, the ram F and'plunger I will be elevated and the cylinder J raised by the reverse rotation of the sleeve G. Thereafter the platens V, by the reverse rotation of the screws R, will be drawn outward, and the die thus left free will be removed, its sections separated, and the bowl withdrawn. Another bowl with plain surfaces may then be placed in the die and the latter sustained by the platens V,,while the above-described opera tion of lowering the cylinder J and plunger I is repeated. The dies as to form, size, and design will varywith the conditions it is desired to produce in and the nature of the article under treatment, and hence it will be understood that the platens V should be adj usted on the followers T in accordance with the size of the die. It will be observed that the platens V are equal in length and that they overlap each other at one end, thus permitting their adjustment to inclose'a very small die centered on the bed-plate A.
WVhether the platens V are adjusted to close about either a large or a small die, the screws R will exert their pressure on direct lines centrally against the opposite sides of the die and firmly bind the same. The platens V and screws R constitute a press for holding the sections of the die with the requisite firmness for resisting the great force of the hydraulic jack and form an important feature of the invention. It will not be necessaryin every instance to employ four screws R and four platens V,and hence the invention is not confined to any special number of the screws and platens; but that number thereof will be used which may be required by the varying forms of the die-sections.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The die having the matrix to receive the article to be treated, combined with the reciprocatin g threaded cylinder adapted at its lower end to enter the mouth of said die, the packing at the lower end of said cylinderto form a liquid-tight joint, the internally-threaded revoluble external sleeve engaging said cylinder, means for preventing vertical movement in said sleeve, the guide for preventing revolving'motion in said cylinder, and means for exerting pressure upon the liquid within said article, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. i t
2. The die having the matrix to receivethe article to be treated, combined with the recipinder, the vertically-adjustable frame supporting said sleeve and preventing vertical movement therein during its rotation, the guide for preventing revolving motion in said cylinder, and means for exerting pressure upon the liquid within the said article, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.*
3. The die having the matrix to receive the article to be treated and the inclined mouth leading to said matrix, combined with the hollow cylinder through which hydraulic pressure is applied, the nut on the reduced lower end of said cylinder and conforming to said inclined mouth, and the-annular packing held in place by said nut and having the downwardly and inwardly inclined lip to engage the inclined fiange on the article to be treated, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The die having the matrix to receive the article to be treated, combined with the reciprocating threaded cylinder, the nut on the reduced lower end of said cylinder, the packing held in place by said nut and having the annular downwardly-depending lip, the revoluble sleeve engaging said cylinder, the frame supporting said sleeve, the guide for the cylinder, and the plunger adapted to enter said cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The die having the matrix to receive the article to be treated, combined with the hollow reciprocating non-revoluble cylinderhaving packing at its lower end and adapted to engage the article withinsaid die, the plunger in line with and adapted to enter said cylinder, and hydraulic apparatus carrying said plunger, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The die having the matrix to receive the article to be treated, combined with the adjusting pressure-screws R, in line with the sides of said die, the laterally-adjustable platens V, carried by said screws, the hollow I cylinder in line with the said matrix and having packing at its lower end to forma liquidtight joint, and the hydraulic plunger within said cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

The die to receive the article to be treated, the bed-plate, the screws in line with the sides of the die, the followers on said screws, the platens adjustable on said followers, the cylinder communicating with the interior of said article, and the plunger within said cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. The die having the matrix to receive the article to be treated, the screws in line with the sides of the die, th'e followers on said tially as and for the purposes set forth.
9. The die, combined withthe adjusting pressure-screws R in line with the sides thereof and'mouuted in the threaded bearings Q, and the laterally-adjustable inde- :o pendent platens V, carried by the said screws and overlapping each other at one end, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
