UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM HARRY MATTSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BATH ERS APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettere Patent Ne. 486,348, dated November 15,1892.
Application led June 22I 1892. Serial No. 437.634. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may con/cern,.-
Beit known that l, WILLIAM HARRYMAT'I- SON, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Bathers Appliances, of which the following isa specification.
The object of my invention is to provide bathers with a shield for the eyes which will not only protect them from the rays of the sun, but also from Water dripping from the head. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompany drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved eye-shield. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view. Fig. 5 is a view of a modilication, and Fig. 6 is a View showing. my invention applied t a ladys bathing-cap.
It will be understood that my invention can be applied to caps and hats used in rainy weather by sea-faring men and others, although my invention is mainly intended for the use of surf-bathers.
A is the shield, made of suitable light material-such as papier mache-preferably oiled or varnished to make it Waterproof, or Celluloid, indurated ber, or rubber.
a is the shield, projecting from the head of the wearer at an incline and inclined on each side, so that the Water will iiow from the center to the sides.
b is the back flange, resting against the forehead of the wearer, and of sufficient. height to form a proper channel for the water.
d is the front lflange, preferably inclined toward the head and extending to each side, as clearly shown in the drawings, a small space being left at the sides between the front and back ianges for the escape of water. This flange prevents the water from passing down over the shield and directs it to each side ofthe head. Thus the eyes are not only protected from the rays of the sun, but are also protected from the Water, the dripping of which is very annoying to a bather.
The shield is preferably attached to a band B of elastic or other material, which passes around the head, and to a band which passes over the head. Buckles or other fastenings may be used, as shown. Thus the shieldcan be readily secured in position upon the head.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the front flange curvedin at the top to prevent water splashing over the iiange, and in Fig. 6 I have shown the shield applied to an ordinary bathing-cap, principally? used by ladies for protecting the hair.
In attaching my improved shield to a cap or hat it simply takes the place ot' the ordinary projecting brim.
I claim as my inventionl. A shield for the eyes, consisting of a projecting portion a, inclined toward each side, and having an outer flange d for directing Water to the sides of the head, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a shield, of the projecting port-ion a, the inner iiange b, adapted to rest against the head, and the outer flange d, projecting above the base of the shield and forming a trough for the Water, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the shield having an outer ange for directing the water from the face of the wearer and an inner flange adapted to rest against the head, with a cap to which the inner lange of the shield is se cured, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereot' I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two Witnesses:
WILLIAM D. CONNEE, HENRY HoWsoN.
