DAVID WARREN, OF GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWITCHES FOR RAILROADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,574, dated August 22, 1865.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WARREN, of Gettysburg, county of Adams, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Movable Switches for Replacing Cars, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, A A represent the two rails Of an ordinary railroad.
B and O represent two rails which are used as a movable switch. These rails are constructed differently, as shown, the rail O being provided at one end With jaws which iit over one Of the rails A. lIhe other rail, B, is made deeper and thin at one end, and said end lies upon One of the ties and against one of the rails A, as shown. Both B and C are provided, near their other ends, with bars a and c, which are pivoted to them, and are for the purpose OI' preventing them from turning. A chain is attached to bar a, which connects it, by means of a hook, to bar e. This chain prevents separation Ot' the ends of the rails B and O.
The rails U and B can be made either plain, as here shown, or they may he grooved.
rlhe rails are placed as shown. in Fig. 1 when it is desired to replace cars which have run O the track, and it is evident that by the application of power the cars will pass up the switch and Onto the track as they will from the ordinary switch.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tO secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe employment Of the rails B and O, constructed as specified, and used with the rails A A, as and t'or the purpose herein set forth.
