.MEANS FOR HERMETICALLY CLOSING RECEPTACLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,775, dated April 18, 1893. Application filed September 28, 1892. Serial No. 447,128. (No model.) Patented in France January 16, 1891, No. 210,827.
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that 1, Louis ARTHUR Bon- NAMY, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 18 Queenhithe, in the city of London, England, have invented an Improved System of and Means for I-Iermetically Closing Receptacles, (for which I have obtained a patent in France, dated January 16, 1891, No. 210,827,) of,which the following is a speci' ficat-ion.
My invention relates to a new system and means for hermetically closing receptacles especially such as are intended for preserved foods and thelike.
My object is to provide a simple and easily removed closure which will effectually prevent the access of air into the receptacles, and by which no injurious surface or surfaces will be in contact with the contents.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred forms.
Figure 1 is a section of a cover; Fig. 2 a section of a receptacle; Fig. 3 a section of compressible ring; Fig. 4 a part plan of ring; Fig. 5 a perspective view of clasp open; Fig. 6 a section showing the parts in position when closure is made, and Fig. 7 an elevation of same.
A is the cover with a projecting flange, and of such shape as to project fora suitable distance into the receptacle B which has a projecting collar 1) about its mouth.
0 is the compressible ring and D the clasp.
The upper surface of the outer part of flange a and the lower surface of the outer part of collar 1) are both slightly beveled as shown. In the lower face of flange a annular grooves a are formed and a shallow rim 1) is formed upon collar b and a corresponding groove a in flange a; outside of which in flangeais formed the annular groove 64', preferably with concentric ribs and inclined upward inwardly as shown in Figs. 1 and 6.
The surface Z2 of collar (1 is left flat or approximately so. The ring 0 is of rubber or other compressible material and is covered on its inner side and for part of its width,as illustrated, with tin foil or other non-injurione medium 0.
The clasp D, Fig. 5, is made of tin plate or other resilient metal and has at its top and base inwardly projecting rims or flanges cl extending the full length of the clasp, when closed. They are cut away at one or more points d, so as to enable the clasp to be read"- ily bent back and opened. One of the free ends has a plain extension E, in which. is cut a slot 6, and near the other end of D is stamped or formed a tongue 6.
To effect the hermetic closure, the ring O is first placed on the surface b of collar 1) or in the groove 01, of flange a and the cover A is then put on the receptacle B, the parts fitting Then pressure is applied by a lever, clamp, or other suitable and convenient means to the cover A, sufflcient to compress the ring 0, and while under pressure the clasp. D is presented half opened and fitted around the flange a and collar b, so that its rims d, d grip and hold upon the beveled surfaces thereof. Then the clasp is firmly drawn or pressed together and the tongue 6' inserted through slot-e in E, and bent backward as shown in Fig. 7, effectually and hermetically closing the receptacle. The
tin foil 0 also effectually prevents the 'contents of the receptacle coming in contact with the rubber or other substance of which it is made. To open the receptacle it is only necessary to bend back and unhook the tongue e from the slot 6 when the clasp and cover may be easily removed and access to the contents obtained.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent, is- I In combination, the jar having a rim with a plain bearing face and a flange b at the inner edge thereof, the cover having a portion to depend within the flange b and a groove a the said cover having also a rim with its under surface inclining upwardly toward the groove a and provided with grooves, the packing between the inclined grooved face of the cover rim and the flat face of the jar rim the .tin foil covering the inner edge of the packing and part of its upper and lower bearing surface and the clasp for embracing the rims,
