Description

UNITED. STATES PATENT OEEICE.
STEPHEN M. RIHARDS, OF LITGHFIELD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOMAS W. JONES, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPRVEM ENT lN SASH-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,592, dated August 212, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN INI. RrcHARDs, ot' Litchfield, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is a horizontal section otl a window with my improvement applied to it, taken in the line xm, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front or face view of a window with my invention applied to it, the sash and window-frame being partly iu section, as well as the fastening itself.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to anew and improved sash-fastening, and has for its object a more convenient mode than usual ot' liberating the sash in order to raise and lower the same.
To this end the invention consists iu the employment or use of two slide latches or catches connected with a nger or thumb piece or a to throw the latches or catches D l) outward into holes or notches c in the sides ofthe window-frame whenever the latches or catches come in line with the same and the springs are permitted to act.
The inner ends of the latches or catches D are connected by cords or chains b I) to a ringer or thumb piece, F, which is tted to the sash in such a manner that it is allowed a certain degree of vertical play. This may be effected by having a dovetail projection, b', at the rear ot' the thumb-piece fitted in a corresponding groove, c,in the sash. (Shown in Fig. l.) Two pulleys, d d, are also Iitted or placed in the groove O for the cords or chains b b to pass under and cause said cords or chains, as the thumb-piece F is drawn upward, to pull directly inward and out from the holes a the latches or catches D D, thereby liberating the sash and permitting it to be raised Linder they upward pressure applied to thenger or thumb piece F. Thus it will be seen that the latches or catches D D are operated or drawnvout from the holes t in the window-frame under the same pressure which is exerted upon or against the finger or thumb piece F to raise the sash; and it will further be seen that the springs E will throw the latches or catches into the holes c in the frame A when they come in line with the same and the ringer or thumb piece is released to admit of the springs E acting upon the latches or catches.
This invention may be applied to the upper as well as to the lower sashes of windows.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the horizontally-sliding latches D D, of the finger-piece F, cords b l), and pulleys d d, when the parts are arranged to operate iu the manner and for the purpose described.
STEPHEN M. RICHARDS.
