Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDERS MARTINUS STRUSHOLM, OF WOODBRIDGE, NEV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT W. LYLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TI LE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,544, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed August 29, 1892. Serial No. 444.402. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERS MARTINUS STRUSHOLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVoodbridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new, usefnl, and valnable1mprovement in Tile-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for securing tiles in position on floors, walls, ceilings or other suitable places, and my object is to provide a device of this character which will be cheap to manufacture, durable in use and effectual in operation.
With these objects in view my invention consists of an inverted wedge-shaped fastening device having flanged sides adapted to be secured to the fl0ors or walls and ceilings of buildings, as the case may be and as will fully be described in the annexed specification and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the manner in which my device is applied to the walls and tiles, and Fig-. 2 is a perspectivo view of my fastening device.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the board hacking or scantlings. Attached to the said scantlin gs or hacking is my improved fastening device which consists of an inverted 0 wedge-shaped raised portion 2 having integral flaring sides 3, 3, provided with holes 4, 4, for the reception of nals or screws by means of which the tile-fastener issecured to the walls, ceilin g or floors of the building in which 5 it is to be used. The raised portions 2 of the device serves as a tongue which is fitted into a corresponding groove 5 in the rear or lower face of the tile-section to connect the latter to the wall, floor or ceiling, as the case may be. A small quantity of plaster or coment is used at the juncture of the raised portions or tongues 2 and the grooves 5 to aord the requisite stability to the structure and to prevent the tiles from becoming loose from their fastenings. The simplicity, cheapness and durability of this structure and the ease With Which it can be placed in position commend it to persons desiring this class of ornamentation.
It is obvious that this fastening device may be used for fastenin g tiles on stoves or in other analogous places.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 5 5 1. The herein described tile fastening device comprising the inverted wedge-shaped raised portion having integral flaring sides, parallel with the flat top portion of the wedge, said sides being flaring and being provided With holes for the reception of securing-nails or screws, as set f0rth.
2. As a new article of manufacture a sheet metal tile fastening struck up from a single piece of metal having a central wedge-shaped 6 raised portion and flaring sides, parallel to the top of the wedge-shaped portion.
In testimonywhereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDERS MARTINUS STRUSHOLM.
Wtnesses:
J. V. FREEMAN, EDWARD CHRISTIE.
