JACOB VOLK, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
RAILWAY-CROSSING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,694., dated May 16, 1893.
Application filed December 10 1892. Serial No. 454,779. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AOOB VOLK, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway-Crossings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved crossing for cable and steam or other railway tracks; and myinvention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a top or plan View, part in horizontal section. Fig. II is avertical section, taken on line II-II, Fig. I. Fig. III is avertical section, taken on line III-III, Fig. I.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the main rails, and 2 the guard rails of a steam or other railway track.
3 represents the rails of a cable railway track, of which 4 represents the conduit and 5 the slot rails.
6 represents the yokes of the cable road, which are made preferably of rectangular form, as shownin Fig. II, and which have flanges or heads 7 forming a base or rest for the steam track rails, 1 and 2, as shown in Fig. III.
8 is a filling located between the rails 1 and 2, and which is bolted thereto, as shown at 9, Fig. I. This filling is secured to the heads or flanges of the yokes 6 by means of bolts, as shown at 10, Fig. III. The yokes are thus utilized to form a support for the rails 1 and 2 at the crossing of the two tracks. The yokes are placed a suitable distance apart, say four or five feet, and they may be connected by tie rods 11, as shown in Figs. II and III. The ends of the rails 3 of the cable road also rest upon the heads or flanges of the yokes 6, as shown in Fig. III, and the webs of these rails are connected to the webs of the rails 1 and 2, by means of brackets 12 and bolts 9 and 13. The slot rails 5 are also connected to the webs of the rails 1 and 2 by means of brackets let and bolts 15.
16 represents plates bolted to the flanges or heads of the yokes 6, and which fit over the bases of the rails 1 and 2, as shown.
By means of this construction, the rails of the two tracks are held from relative displacement and the yokes of the cable road are utilized, as already stated, to form a chair or support for the rails of the other road.
It is evident that where there are two tracks of the cable road, side by side, the yokes 6 of the two tracks may be connected to form one continuous member.
I claim as my inventiou 1. In combination with the main and guard rails of a steam or other road, the yokes of a cable road, a filling block between said rails, and bolts passing through said filling blocks and through the heads or flanges of said yokes; substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the main and guard rails of a steam or other road, the yokes of a cable road, a filling-block between said rails, bolts passing transversely between the rails and filling-block to secure them together, and bolts passing vertically through the fillingblock and supporting yoke to hold the rails in place, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the rails of a steam or other road, the yokes of a cable road having heads or flanges adapted to receive said rails, and adapted also to receive the rails of a cable road, brackets and bolts connecting said rails together and to the heads or flanges of said yokes and the plates 16 for securely holding the rails 1, and 2, to the yokes; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
