Description

(No Model.) i
O. W. PRENTISS.
SHIRT.
Patented May 16, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. PRENTISS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 497,727, dated May 16, 1893.
Application filed October 13, 1892. Serial No. 448,770. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. PRENTISS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Shirts; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in wearing apparel, and is especially designed for application to mens shirts.
It consists in certain details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1. is a view of a shirt, showing my invention, one of the supplemental sleeves being separated from the body. Fig. 2. shows the reversible cults.
Wearcrs of shirts find that the sleeves as Well as the cuffs often become soiled before the other portion of the shirt, and the objectof my invention is to provide detachable sleeves finished and faced upon both surfaces and attached to cuffs midway between the opposite ends thereof to allow the sleeves to be turned inside out and means for securing them to the shirt proper.
A is the body of the shirt of any usual construction, having short sleeves B, which may extend from the shoulder to the middle of the upper arm. The ends of these sleeves have one or more lines of button holes, or fastenings around them for the attachment of the upper ends of the supplemental sleeves C. These sleeves are made of suitable length so that when attached the whole length of the main and supplemental sleeve will be what is desired. By reason of the duplicated row of fastenings for the supplemental sleeves, I am enabled to lengthen or shorten if necessary by fastening them lower or higher upon the main sleeves. I have shown the lower end of the sleeve portion attached to the central portion of the cuff D as shown at E, so that half of the cuff projects above the attachment, and the other half below. This enables me to reverse the cuff when the lower end becomes soiled, by simply turning, so that the upper end will be brought into the place of the lower end. By this construction I am enabled to reverse the cuffs so that both ends may be used, and when both cuffs and sleeves have become soiled, the sleeves may be detached and others substituted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A detachable sleeve for shirts having its lower end attached to a cuff midway between the opposite ends thereof, the said sleeve finished and faced upon both surfaces and adapted to be turned inside out and provided with means for securing the same to the shirt proper, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES WV. PRENTISS.
