Uivrrsn STATES PATENT EVELINE vV. THOMPSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
EXTENSION TRAVELING-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 5,928, dated March 6, 1 894. Application filed July 13, 1893. $crial No. h (N0 model) To aZZ whom it may concerns- Be it known that I, EVELINE W. THOMP- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Extension Travcling-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved extension traveling bag, a part of the cover being broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the same with cover removed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on line we".
Same letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to improvements in extension traveling bags and more particularly to that class of bags which are formed by a stiff rectangular trunk and a similar rectangular cover adapted to telescope over the trunk whereby the cover may be made to form a part of the interior of the trunk when desired. The objection to this class of traveling bags are that it is difficult to hold the articles contained therein in position above the edge of the trunk proper when a large number of articles are to be placed therein and also a tendency on the part of the articles in the bag to bulge out at the sides.
The object of the present invention is to obviate these objections.
My improvement consists in a flexible extension attached to the top edge of the trunk proper and adapted to extend a considerable distance above said edge, means inserted in the top of said flexible extension for drawing the edges closely together, and also in certain other details of construction which will be hereinafter more fully described.
. In said drawings co represents the rectangular trunk of the bag, I) the telescoping cover adapted to shut down over said trunk. Securely attached to the top edge of said trunk is a flexible extension 0 of substantially the same dimensions as the horizontal dimensions of the trunk and having one or more cords loosely secured to the upper edge and passing around the upper part thereof in such manner that the upper edge can be drawn closely together. This may be accomplished as follows: By turning the upper edge back upon itself to form a closed passage d around the top and passing therethrough inopposite directions two cords c 6 so that, by drawing the ends of said cords in opposite directions,-
the top of the flexible extension may be drawn together; or this may be accomplished in any convenient manner as by passing a cord back and forth through the material at short intervals. In order to give sufficient fullness to the extension so that it can be turned down over the side of the trunk while the trunk is being packed the flexible material may be turned back upon itself to form a plait f at that point; or this fullness may be secured in any other convenient manner.
The operation of my device is as follows: The trunk is filled and when the articles put in extend above the edge thereof they are placed in position and the extension drawn up over them and then the upper edges are drawn together. This holds them securely in position and prevents them from pressing out the sides of the bag. The cover is then placed down over the said extension and the trunk and said trunk and cover are secured together by a strap passing around both and adapted to .be adjusted to hold the cover closely down upon the contents of the trunk or by any other suitable device for holding said cover and trunk adj ustably together.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim 1. A traveling bag having a rigid trunk, a flexible extension'attached to the top thereof, a cover adapted to shut down over said extension and slide freely on said trunk and adjustable means for holding said trunk and cover together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A traveling bag having a rigid trunk, a flexible extension secured to the top thereof, means for gathering the top of said extension together, a cover adapted to shut down over said extension and slide freely on said trunk and means for securing said trunk and cover together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A traveling bag having a rigid trunk, a
flexible extension secured to the top thereof, In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature 1n sgid extensilon having one or more plaits at presence of two witnesses. t e point w ere the extension is secured to the trunk, means for gathering the top of said 4 EVELINE THOMPbON' 5 extension together, and a cover'adapted to Witnesses:
shut down over said extension and trunk, ELGIN O. VERRILL, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. I LUNETTE E. WVILSON.
