. B. V. PITZHUGH. COMBINATION BOOK BEST AND TABLE 0R STAND.
No. 518,594. Patented Apr. 24, 1894.
w l omam jj UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BESSIE V. FITZHUGH, OF-BOWIIING GREEN, KENTUCKY.
COMBINATION BOOK-REST AND TABLE OR STAND.
SPEG IFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,594, dated April 24, 1894.
Application filed September 25, 1893- Serial No. 486,477. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BESSIE V. FITZHUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Warren and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Oombination Book-Rests and Tables or Stands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to improvements in combination book rests and tables or stands adapted and designed for the use of persons while in bed.
It consists of the novel construction and arrangements of its parts as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention used as a book rest. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of my invention used as a stand or table.
The device consists of a rectangular body portion 1, having the extended legs 2, 2, and a strip 3, hinged to the lower edge of the portion 1. Said strip 3, is adapted when in use to be held up by the cords 4, 4, or other suitable device, as shown in Fig. 1, and thereby forming the rest for a book. The book is held open by an elastic band 5, or other suitable device. The body portion 1,
is held at the proper incline by the supports 6. Said supports are connected by suitable cross pieces and are hinged to the back of the body portion 1.
In using the book rest shownin Fig. 1, the body of the user passes between the legs 2, 2, and between the legs orsupports 6, 6, and under the body portion 1. The additional legs 7, 7, are hinged to the under or rear side of the supports 6, 6. Said legs when not in use are placed as shown in Fig. 1, and when in use they are placed as shown in Fig. 2.
When the device is used as a stand or table, the legs 2, 2, and the supports 6, 6, are brought together; the strip 3, is let down and the cords 4, 4, and band 5, removed, and the legs 7, 7, opened all as shown in Fig. 2. The upright portion of the body of the user passes up between the legs 2, 2, said legs forming arm rests, and the legs of the user extend under the portion 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A co mbination book rest and table or stand consisting of a body portion having extended legs, and supports hinged to the rear side of the said body portion, said supports when closed adapted to coincide with the extended legs, and legs hinged to the back or under sides of the said supports, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BESSIE V. FITZHUGH. Witnesses:
