Description

(No Model.)
W. T. FLANIKEN UNLQADING DEVICE:
No. 525,951. Patented Sept. 11, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VVALLAOE T. FLANIKEN,OF TEHUACANA, TEXAS.
UNLOADING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,951, dated September 11,1894.
Application filed October 23, 1893. Serial No. 488.932. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALLACE T. FLANIKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tehuacana, in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Unloading Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in envelopes or packing bags, adapted to be placed in an ordinary wagon, to receive seed the rotating rod released to open the bag and dump the contents thereof. Fig. 4, isa detail perspective view of one end of the beam showing the manner of locking the rotatable rod.
Fig. 5, is a plan view of the beam and rod.
In the said drawings, the reference letter A, designates the bed or body of an ordinary farm wagon, in which is placed the packing bag which is constructed as follows:
The letter B, designates a rectangular strip of canvas or other similar material, of a length about equal to the length of the wagon body, having secured thereto at each end, strips B which form the ends of the bag, to which are secured a horizontal strip B forming one side thereof, the central portion of the strip B, forming the other side of the bag, which strip is formed with a top flap B and a bottom flap B The ends B and side B are formed or provided with inwardly extending flaps B and B Secured to the strip or sheet B, are a number of ropes C, at suitable distances apart, the free portions or ends 0', and 0 being formed or provided with loops or eyes 0 These ropes are secured to the strip or sheet B, at the top and bottom edges thereof and at intermediate points, if desired.
The letter D, designates an elevating beam, which is elevated by means of a rope (1, connected with hoisting mechanism, not shown. At one side this beam is provided with a number of hooks (2 with which the loops C of the rope ends 0 engage. Upon the opposite side said beam is provided with staples d in which is journaled a rotatable rod or roller E, provided with a number of pins 6 with which the loops of the rope ends 0', engage. This roller is provided with an arm 6', adapted to engage with an eye or loop 6 on the outer end of a rod 6, pivoted to a staple 6 secured to beam D. The beam is also provided with a stop pin :0. The object of this construction is to lock the rod E, against rotation when the ends 0, of the ropes C, are connected with the pins e The operation is as follows: The bag is placed in the wagon with the flap B resting on the bottom and the side B and central portion of the sheet or strip B, lying against the sides of the wagon body and the end pieces B against the ends thereof, the lower ends of said side B and the ends B being tucked inwardly and resting on the bottom flap B The bag is now filled with loose cotton seed and the flaps B turned inwardly upon the seed and the flaps B and B then folded thereupon, thus forming a covering for the seed, as seen in Fig.1. The wagon can now be moved to the press or other place at which the seed is to be dumped, and the loops 0 of the ropes connected with hooks (Z and pins 6 The beam D, is then elevated when the bag will be raised out of the wagon body. The beam is then swung over to the place where the seed is to be dumped, and
the end of rod 6, disengaged from the arm e,
allowing the rod E, to rotate and the loops C of the ends 0', of the ropes O, to slip off of pins 6 when the weight of the seed will cause bottom flap to fall down as seen in Fig. 3, and the contents of the bag to drop out. The strips F, at the ends of the bottom flap are simply for stiffening the latter and may be dispensed with, if desired.
What I claim is 1. A packing bag of the character described consisting of the rectangular sheet having top and bottom flaps, the end pieces, secured thereto, having inwardly extending flap, the side piece secured to the end pieces and'provided with inwardly extending flap, and ropes secured to said rectangular sheet, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a packing bag comprising the rectangular sheet having top and bottom flaps, the end pieces secured thereto, having inwardly extending flaps, the side secured to said end pieces having an inwardly extending flap and the ropes secured to said sheet having loops or eyes at their ends, of the beam having hooks at one side and a rotatable rod at the other side provided with pins, and means for locking said rod, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with a packing bag consisting of the rectangular sheet having top and bottom flaps, the end pieces secured thereto, having inwardly extending flaps, the side secured to said end pieces having inwardly extending flap, and the ropes secured to said sheet and having loops or eyes at the ends, of the elevating beam provided with hooks at one side and with a rotatable rod having pins, at the opposite side, the arms secured to said rod, the pivoted rod having an eye adapted to engage with said arm, and the stop pin, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
.WALLAOE T. FLANIKEN.
