G. DOMINIOK ELASTIC WIRE SUPPORT FOR BEDS OR SEATS. No. 526,860. Patented Oct 2, 1894.
A TTORNE Y8.
THE NORRI$ PETERS on, PHOYO-LITNQ, WASNINGYOM By C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV DOMINIOK, OF COLOGNE, GERMANY.
ELASTIC WIRE SUPPORT FOR BEDS OR'SEATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,860, dated October 2, 1894.
Application filed April 1, 1893- SerialNo.4:68,751.
land January 8, 1893, No.1,480,
(No model.) Patented in Germany September 13, 1892 No. 68,639 in Bugin Switzerland Ja ua y 24, 1893, No. 6,319; in Belgium February 1, 1894, No. 103,226,
and in Austria-Hungary June 17, 1894, No. 6,230 and No. 19,733.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV DOMINICK, a subject of the King of Prussia, and a resident of Cologne, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Wire Supports for Beds or Seats, (patented in Germany, No. 68,639, dated September 13, 1892; in England, No.1, 480, dated January 8, 1893; in Switzerland, No. 6,319, dated January 24, 1893; in Belgium, No. 103,226, dated February 1, 1894, and in Austria-Hungary, No. 6,230 and No. 19,733, dated June 17, 1894,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a plan view, and Fig. 3 a cross sectional elevation of a spring mattress constructed according to my invention. Fig.4 shows oneof the trans verse springs; and Fig. 5 one of the longitudinal springs employed in my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
My invention consists in providing within a suitable frame, two series of springs running cross-wise of each other andessentially parallel to the sides of the frame, the springs of one series being fastened to the frame at both ends, while the springs of the other series are secured at one end only, the other ends thereof being guided in eyes formed preferably by twisting the springs of the first series into coils, as will be more readily understood by reference to the drawings.
To the iron or wooden frame I) b, I secure at the shorter sides a series of parallel longitudinal coiled Wire springs a. (See Fig. 5.)
The coils are wound obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the spring, thus permitting the ends of the wires ato be inserted from the side, as will be presently described.
Longitudinal iron rods or bars b are. fitted on both sides of the frame b.- To these rods I secure one end of each of a second series of springs a, made as shown in detail in Fig. 4. It will be observed that one end portion 'of these wire springs is coiled on the rods b, While the remaining portion of the springs is substantially straight and is passed through the spirals of the several longitudinal springs c. The'free ends of the springs a are bent into eyes (see Fig. 4) so that they cannot slip out of the longitudinal springs c. It will be obvious that the free ends of the springs a are capable of sliding in the coils of the Springs 0, and will be constantly kept the same distance apart by the said coils.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. The mattress formed by the springs or. 0 will yield to the slightest pressure, as the two series of springs are not rigidly connected, but each series is capable of yielding to a certain extent, independently of the other series. The springs a, being however guided in the springs c, the whole mattress Will always form a slightly curved or plane surface, and the springs of both series will supplement each other in their action.
It will be obvious that my invention is applicable to cushions for various articles of furniture, for carriage seats, and the like.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A spring support for beds and seats, consisting of a suitable frame, a series of springs arranged lengthwise of the frame and secured thereto at both ends, and another series of springs placed crosswise of the frame, each spring of the second series being fast at one end and having its other end freely guided in suitable eyes formed on, or attached to,
the springs of the first series, for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
- GUSTAV DOMINICK.
