York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes,,of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved match-box in which a certain number of matches is packed insuch a manner that they can be safely and conveniently carried in the pocket and that they areignited when pulled out of the box, without any danger of igniting the remaining matches; and the invention consists of a match-box made of a wrapper or case provided with a closing top-flap and side-flaps,a corrugated partition having an igniting-surfaceat each side and secured to the wrapper and a covering or finishing wrapper applied to the body of said mainwrapper, and adapted to form a pocket for the tongue of the closing top-flap, as will be hereinafter described and then particularly claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. represents aperspectiveview of my improved match-box, showing the wrapper in open position, so as to show the interior construction of the box. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the match-box showing the same afterthe same is filled with matches and before the wrapper is closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the match-box showing the same in finished condition. Fig. 4 is a detail viewof the blank of the covering or finishing wrapper. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 5, 5, Fig. 3.

the interior corrugated partition of the same, and O the exterior covering or finishing wrapper. p

The wrapper A is preferably made of manila-paper or other suitable material and provided with a covering flap a and tongue ct, which covering flap is arranged at the up gradually in size from the upper toward the lower ends, as. shown clearly in Fig. 1, and

these side-flaps or gussets serve to close the sides of the box. V

The interior corrugated partition B is made of suitable stid materiahpreferably sheetmetal, which supports two rows of matches, one row at each side, the matches being placed into the corrugation of the partition, so that one row of matches is located between the partition B and the rear-wall of the wrapper A and the other row between the partition and the front-wall of the wrapper, said rows of matches being so arranged as to alternate with'each other and permit thereby the convenient removal of one match. after the other from the inclosing box.

The partition B is made of smaller height than the front and rear-walls of the wrapper A, so that it is entirely covered thereby. The partition B is provided at both sides of its upper part with a suitable ignition-surface b which serves for igniting-the matches as they are withdrawn from the box. The partition B is further provided at its lower end with anchors b, the middle anchor 19' being preferably of larger size than the small anchors b, b. The anchors are passed through slits b in the lower or bottom part of the wrapper. After the anchors b, b, are passed through the bottom slits in the wrapper, they are bent over at right angles to the partition, so as to be attached thereby firmly to the wrapper A. The middle larger anchor b is preferably bent in forward direction so as to project be yond the front-wall of the wrapper, and permit thereby the attachment of a thin flexible fastening wire 61 that is attached in any suitable manner to the rear-wall of the wrapper A, passed downward over the front-wall of the wrapper and then twisted several times around the middle anchor b, as shown in Fig. 2. The anchor b is then bent up onto the front-wall and retains thereby the fastening wire cl. The covering or, finishing wrapper 0 is next pasted around the body of the IOO . bottom-flaps c are bent up over the lower wider ends of the side-flaps a and also covered by the side-flaps e e of the covering wrapper, as shown in Fig. 3.

The covering or finishing wrapper 0 may be printed in any suitable colors and any suitable advertisement may be placed thereon,s0 as to permit the match-box to be given away Without charge.

My improved matchbox is filled and completed in the following manner: The wrapper A is placed in open position, it being provided with the necessary slits and creases, so that the anchor of the partition B can be readily secured to the same by passing, the anchors through the slits of the wrapper. A row of matches is then placed into the corrugations at one side of the partition and the partition pressed with the matches onto the rear-wall of the wrapper A. The second row of matches is then placed into the corrugations at the other side of the partition and the front-wall folded over the same, so that both rows of matches are firmly held in position by the wrapper. 'The fastening is then drawn tightly over the front-wall and tied to the middle anchor of the partition as shown in Fig. 2. The covering wrapper G is then pasted around the body of the match-box thus formed by the main wrapper, the side-' flaps of the covering wrapper being pasted over the side-flaps e of the wrapper A, over the bottom-flaps of the covering wrapper O and over the bottom-flap c of the latter, as shown in Fig. 3. The top-flap a is then folded over the projecting ends of the two rows of matches and the tongue a of the same inserted into the pocket formed between the front-Wall of the wrapper A and the covering bottom-flap e, which latter is left without paste at e for this purpose, the fastening wire serving as a means to facilitate the insertion of the tongue in closing the box.

The match-box thus produced hasa fiat shape and can be readily carried in the pocket the matches being removed from the same one after the other and ignited by the frictional contact with the ignition-surface as each match is withdrawn. After all the matches are used, the wrapper is thrown away.

When the-box is to be used for restaurants the cigar or other dealer, the box forming a safe, convenient and reliable device for general pocket use. v

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A match-box, composed of a wrapper or case provided with a closing top-flap, and side-flaps, a corrugated partition having an igniting-surface at each side of and secured to the wrapper, and a covering or finishing wrapper applied to the body of said mainwrapper, and adapted to form a pocket for the tongue of the closing top-flap, substantially as set forth.

2. A match-box, composed of an inclosing wrapper or case, provided with a closing topflap, and side flaps, a corrugated partition having an ignition-surface at each side, said partition being attached by anchors to slits in the bottom part of the wrapper, a fastening device for applyingthe wrapper tightly to the partition, and a covering or finishing wrapper united with the body of the mainwrapper, and adapted to form a pocket for the tongue of the closing top-flap, substantially as set forth.
