Description

(NoModeL) S. E. BAUDER. CONVERTIBLE REGBBTAGLE. No. 533,043. Patented Jan. 29, 1895.
R U T N E V IN WITNESSES v aAx/A a UNITED STATES PATENT J rrrcs.
SILAS E. BAUDER, 0F NORWALK, OHIO.
CONVEBTIBLE RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,043, dated J'anuary 29, 1895.
Application filed October 18, 1894- Serial No. 526,264:- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAS E. BAUDER, a citizen of-the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Receptacles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to convertible receptacles, the object in View being to produce a cheap and simple device adapted to receive and hold as a receptacle or box, a package of chewing gum or other small articles of merchandise; and further adapted to be readily .converted into a lamp-chimney stove to be mounted on a chimney of a lighted lamp and conveniently held over the burning wick to be heated as a crimping or a curling iron, such as are commonly used by the ladies in crimping and curling the hair, and still further adapted to hold and heat a small dish of water, milk or food.
Other objects and advantages'of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the invention as it appears when in the form of a receptacle. Fig. 2 is also a View in perspective, showing the invention as it appears in the form of a receptacle and turned bottom side up. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device as it appears when in the form ofa stove and mounted on a lamp-chimney, the dotted lines thereunder representing the upper portion of such chimney. Fig. 4'is a plain view of a sheet metal blank adapted to be formed into the convertible receptacle and lamp chimney stove herein set forth.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the horizontal top 1 is provided with a central opening or slot 2 and its normally projecting ends are bent downwardly to form keepers 3-3. The
two vertical sides 4-4 are each provided with a semi-circular incision 55 thereby forming wings 6-6 which wings 66 are adapted to be bent in alignment with the horizontal top 1 to broaden the same.
When the device is in the form of a receptacle, two over-lapping parts (or legs) 77 (see Fig. 2) form a narrow or scant transverse bottom therefor. One of the parts 77 is provided with a notch 8, the other with a tongue 9 whereby they may be interlocked and each part 77 is adapted to be bent in alignment with the side @&4 to which it is attached, thereby converting the receptacle into a lampohimney stove, the parts 77 now serving as legs or hold-fasts for such stove, as illustrated in Fig. 3. On either side of the scant bottom is a bottomless portion, and the ends outside of the smallspace occupied by the keepers 3-3 are open ones.
The receptacle above described, while adapted to receive, and hold small articles of merchandise, as chewing gum and the like,is also adapted to be readily converted into a lamp-chimney stove by simply bending each of the two parts 77 composing its scant bottom, downwardly and outwardly in alignment with the side 4=4= to which such part 77 is attached, thereby forming legs or hold-fasts of such parts 7 -7 which legs or'hold-fasts are designed to be placed inside of the lamp chimney when the stove is mounted thereon, to prevent displacement of the same therefrom, and by bending the wings 66 outwardly in alignment with the top 1, the stove will then be broadened sufficiently to hold a small cup or dish, and the opening or slot 2, in the top 1, is adapted to receive and hold a curling or crimping lI'Ol].
Having described my invention, what I claim is- A convertible blank consisting of a rectangular body portion, provided with a central opening, and having side extensions or tongues, and crooked slits in either side of the said central portion, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SILAS E. BAUDER. Witnesses:
PEREZ H. STARR, CHARLES Sons.
