Description

. .PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHE. WASHINGTON. C.
UNITED STATES HARRISON COLE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVED FLOOR ATTACHMENT FOR FURNITURE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,415, dated March 2-7, 1866.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HARRISON COLE, ot' Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Device for Attaching Furniture to Floors; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making part of this specication.
My invention relates to a provision whereby desks and other articles ot' furniture can be tirmly and expeditiously attached to their places on a oor, and can be also readily detached therefrom.
Figure l represents a leg or standard of a school-desk detached from its sockets. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot' the same locked rmly wit-hin its sockets, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 3 shows a moditlcation of my invention.
The leg or standard A is provided at its lower parts or feet, B B', with dovetailed tenons C C', of which the tenon C is inserted at the wider end of the converging mortise D ofthe socket E and the tenon C in the under cut mortise D of the socket E. The entire leg is pushed in direction of the arrow, so as to bind the dovetailed tenon C within the converging mortise D, and at the same time to engage the hooked end of the tenon C in the under cut mortise Dl by the action of a tongue, F, which is pressed down so as to wedge behind thc tenon C and to lock the whole iirinly in place. Notches G Vand H in the foot of socket enable the insertion of a screw-driver or other convenient instrument to either depress or elevate the tongue F.
I have shown the invention in its application to a metallic frame or leg, but is equally applicable to Wooden frames, the tenon being formed in suitable Harige-plates I, as in Fig.
The invention is applicable to school-desks and settces, seats in assembly and lecture rooms, tables, chairs, and other furniture on shipboard, and a great variety of other uses not necessary to particularize.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The furniture Hoor-fastening, consisting of the dovetailed tenons C C and sockets E E', having one or more binding or locking tongues F, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto setiny hand. Y
HARRISON COLE.
