Description

(No Model.) S. NORRIS. CHOPPING KNIFE,
Patented Peb. -19'n 1895.
m .Z C u s c UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
SAMUEL NORRIS, OF BEDFORD, IOWA.
CHOPPING-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters '.atent No. 534,570, dated February 19, 1895.
Application filed J' une 420, 1894. Serial No. 515 ,164- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL NORRIS, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Bedford, in the county of Taylor and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Chopping-Knife, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chopping knives, and it has for its object to eect certain improvements in knives of that character that are employed for chopping or cutting meat into hash, chopping cabbage, potatoes and other vegetables, and also for cutting cakes, biscuit, &c.
To this end the main and primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive chopping knife that shall be light and strong and possess efficient means for properly performing its different functions.
With these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a knife constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the frame. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line wof Fig. 2. 1
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a circular or cylindrical open knife-blade body that is made out of a single blank of sheet-steel. The knife blade body is cut to the desired size, being usually about three inches in diameter, and the two edges Aof the metal blank from which the knife is made are brought together at one side into a single seam2, and are soldered or otherwise suitably secured at this point to complete the true circular or cylindrical shape of the blade.
The circular blade body l is beveled at its lower edge into the circular cutting edge 3, and from opposite sides and the upper edge of the blade body are extended upwardly the integral parallel attaching arms 4, be-
tween which and the upper edge of thebody at both sides of said arms, the blade body is cut into a shape to form substantially V-4 shaped open spaces 5, that are sufficientlyl large, and extend to a point sufficiently low, so as to facilitate the easy discharge of the material being cut, when it Iills up the interior of the blade body, and thereby obvi'ating clogging of the same.
The upper extremities of the opposite integral parallel attaching arms 4 have securely fastened thereto the ends of the curved handle strap or bail 6.' The curved handle strap or bail 6 is preferably made of a strip of galvanized sheet iron of a width easily grasped by the hand, and the opposite side edges of the strap or bail are rolled into the edge beads 7, that make the edges smooth so that the device can be comfortably manipuwhich are secured the upper ends of the' arms 4:, by means of the securing rivets 9, and the upper fastened ends of the said arms 4, are tightly embraced or overlapped at their side edges by the edge beads 7 of the'handle strap or bail, so that the-connection between these two parts is made more secure and rm, and is prevented from loosening on the rivets 9.
' Theherein described knife while being very strong and very efficient for the several purposes to which it may be adapted, is at the same time light and easily manipulated, and the many other advantages of the same will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
In a knife of the class described, the combination of a circular blade body made of a` the blade body, and a curved handle strap In testimony that claim the foregoing as or bail provided with downturned attaching my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 1o ends seeurked to the upper extremities of the the presence of two Witnesses.
said attac ing arms, and edge beads rolled 5 from its opposite side edges and adapted to SAMUEL NORRIS tightly embrace or overlap the upper fas- Witnesses: tened ends of said securing arms, substan- J. W. BECK, tially as set forth. R. A. BECK.
