THOMAS L. STU'RTEVANT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
I IMPROVEMENT IN PRIMING- CARTRIDGES.
' Specificationformtng part of Letters Patent No. 53,501, dated March 27, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, THOMAS L. STURTE- VANT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful improvement or invention having reference to Cartridges or Chargers for Breech- Loading Fire-Arms and do hereby declare the same to be fullydescribed in the following specification and represented in the accompanying' drawing, which is a longitudinal section of a cartridge or charger provided with my 'invention.
In this cartridge the percussion-cap (shown at O in the drawing) is to be placed inverted in the powder or charge chamber 0, and may rest in a cavity or on a seat, f, made in or on the breech B. It is to be exploded by means ofrthe blow of the hammer of the lock of the fire-arm directed upon a plunger, D,passing down laterally into the cartridge, and throng a hole, 9, made in its upper part.
It is notnew to have a percussion-cap so placed within a cartridge; nor is it new to explode it by such means. It has been customplied to the plunger, and with it is inserted in the cartridge, the plunger being constructed not only with a carrier, at, to fit into the cap 0, but with a cap-entrance stopper, 12, having a diameter at least equal to that of the cap, and designed to fill or stop the entrance-hole 9, made in the top of the case of the charger.
The part c of the plunger which projects above the stopper 1), I form of adiameter less than the stopper, in order that there may be a shoulder, h, at the top of the stopper to rest against the bore of the gun or fire-arm when the cartridge may be within the said bore. This shoulder operates to prevent the pressure or explosion of the charge from forcing up the hammer and throwing the plunger out of the barrel.
I claim 1. A percussion-cap plunger or discharger as made with a cap-entrance stopper, 1), and with a cap-carrier, 01,, arranged and designed to operate therewith, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the shoulder h, arranged at the top of the stopper, with the said stopper b, applied to the cap-discharger, for the purpose set forth.
T. L. STURTEVANT.
