To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE FRENCH AT- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, (Highlands,) in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in suspender clamps and cast-offs, and it has for its prime object to provide a clamp at a minimum expense, which will be very effective for the purposes designed and which will have its teeth arranged so as to engage the elastic web or shoulder straps on the rear side so as not to impair, deface, or injure the face which is very desirable with silk-faced suspenders or those of costly production.

A further object of the invention is to so construct the clamps that they will permit of a free and easy adjustment of the suspenders, and will render the holding more effective, the greater the strain or pull may be, and a further object is to provide a cast-off which will be very cheap and durable and which will permit of ready attachment and detachment with the clamp.

Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description and claim when taken in connection wiih the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a front view of a portion of a suspender strap and button hole tabs, with my improvements applied. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal, central, sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the clamp removed from the suspender strap or web, with the cast-off in position.

In carrying out my invention, I take a piece of wire of a sufficient length, and point both ends as shown at a. I then bend the wire, midway of its length, so as to form a depending loop b, and then bend this looped portion so as to form a rearwardly extending short loop 0, which is disposed in a plane approximately at right angles to the loop I), and it is desirable that the bends d, should be brought so close together that it will require the branches to be sprung apart in introducing a cast off as will be presently described. I then form two oppositely directed, outer loops c, after which I carry the material inwardly and form two loops f, and thence outwardly so as to form two other, outwardly directed loops 9, after which the wire is carried in opposite directions and crossed about midway of their length as shown at h, and these crossed branches 2', are bent slightly at the crossing point as shown at 76, after which the ends are carried inwardly, and upwardly oblique, as shown at Z, and thence upwardly and downwardly, as shown at m, after which they are 6 5 twisted slightly forwardly, as shown at 97/, where they terminate in the downwardly, and forwardly directed points a. By this construction it will be seen that I provide a transverse slot or passage p, at the base of the clamp, a similar slot or passage q, parallel thereto, and

a third slot or passage 4", at the upper end of the clamp or in a plane at the base of the points a.

In placing the web in the clamp, I first pass 7 it from'the outer side inwardly through the slot r, thence outwardly through the slot q, downwardly over the loops f, f, and finally inwardly through the slotp. When the web has been thus placed in the clamp, it will be seen that as strain is brought upon it, the branches '6, and Z,'will be sprung and the teeth will more firmly engage the web on the rear side thereof.

A, indicates the cast-off, which may carry button-hole tabs of any suitable character. This cast-off is formed from a piece of wire, having one end bent so as to form a loop B, which may be of a triangular shape in outline, and has one of its ends continued or extended upwardly beyond the loop so as to form a lug journal or stud O, and this stud is headed as shown at D, and is designed to be inserted in the slot 0, of the clamp by first placing it in the upper end of the slot 1), and drawing it downwardly. Thus it will be seen that the 5 cast off may be allowed a swivel movement or universal play in the loop of the clamp, and being very simple and durable, there is nothing about it to get out of order.
