EDWARD R. KANT, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORTO EZRA F; BOWMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
wAToHcAlsE-SP'RING PLIERS.
SECIFICAIION forming part of Letters Patent No. uo 1,926, dated April 23, 1895'. Application filed August 13, 1894. Serial No. 520,156 (No model.)
.Be it known that I, EDWRD R. KANT, a citi-V residing at Lancaster',
, in 'the county ot' Lancaster and State of Penn VIb t able members of the said jaw so thatthe same y sylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Watchcase- Spring Pliers-,tof which the following is a specification.
i This invention relates to improvements in pliers Which'are designed to hold watch-case lsprings to facilitate the insertion thereof into the ease.
' The invention consists in a pliers having, in combination with the curved jaw composed of articulated members, means for changing and holding in their changed positions the adj ust- I "maybe causedfie'adily to con-form to the curves of springs and cases which are of greater or Y less diameter or radius.
AIn the accompanying drawings,'Figure lis a perspective view of the improved watchview of the curved case-spring pliers.` FgxZ is a perspective jaw and the devices for variably adjusting the `curvature thereof. Figs. 3, 4, and are views illustrating details of the devices. Fig. is a sectional View in detail illustrating a construction to be hereinafte'r particularly described. Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view for showing the transverse contour of thecurved jaw.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending characters in all of the views.
The pliers consists ot the two crossed and pivotally united levers, A and B, having the handle members curved as common, while of thearnis at the othery ends thereof `one is curved, as at a, to produce a short,.rigid linger at, or nearly at, right angles to the arm, a2, ot which it is a part. The other arm, d, carries the jaw, C, which comprises the curved part that is designed to bear upon the outer edge' of the watclrcase vand which has a curvature corresponding tothe circular center of the watch case. This curved part is "constructed of two curved Segments, g, g, pivotl'ally united as at b, so that when swung on proximately to, a curve of large radius,v l smaller one so that this jaw may be setto conforni to cases of varying sizes. The pivotmay' be constituted by theintegral extremity of the arm, CZ. rlhe movable membersof the `jaws are adjusted to thedifferentcurves, and when adjusted so held by the provision of the 'devices as follows: `A'screw-threaded post, c, is 55 secured to, and projected perpendioularly p from, the arm, d, next to the'rear side of the movable segments, g, upon which post screws the nut, 7i, withknurled rim. This nut, as it moves endwise on the screw-threaded post, 6,0
the jaw, C, is shown as constituted bya rigid 7c jaw of a proper curvature. 4 l
The jaw, C, has its bearing side covered with chamois skin, or like soft material, indicated at r1, to protect the case against any l injury coming from metallic contact there- 7 5 against by the jaw, C. Thisjaw, C, is further--I more in its concave side longitudinallywand centrally grooved, as seen at 7c, to accommodate the circumferential beads with which watch-case centers are often provided.
The improved device is used iu this inanner: After the watch-case spring has been setf within the inner wall of the watclrcase, the pliers are brought to hold the spring firmly and immovably in place with the screw hole thereof exactly in register with thc screw hole of the case, ,while the attaching screw is put in, the curved jaw lying against the exterior ot the watch-case center while the linger, a, bears against the spring, clamping` the latter ner wall'of the case. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure .by Letters Iatent, is,- p
1. A watch-casespring pliers having one armprovided with a curved jaw andthe other with the narrow jaw or finger, said jaw being composedsofarticulated Lmembers pivotally mountedand, means for changing` and holdroc 90,. in its properly placed position against the in ing in their changed positions the adjustable threading thereon and oarrying'body and :e l
