DUSTING CLOTH HOLDER.
No. 538,269. Patented Apr. 30, 1895.
FFEQQ ATET HANNAH O. NEAGLES, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
DUSTlNG-CLOTH HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,269, dated April 30,1895.
Application filed August 16, 1894. Serial No. 520,488. (No model.)
stick or pole by means of which places and objects overhead can be conveniently reached for purposes of dusting and cleaning and whereby means for suspending the broom or pole to which the device is applied is had.
The device comprises a band or sleeve to encircle the handle or pole having a serrated or toothed edge and laterally extending hooks to engage with and secure the cloth to the said handle in the required position. A bail attached to the device and forming part thereof affords convenient means for suspending the handle having the dusting cloth. secured thereto by my attachment. I
The improvement will be set forth more fully hereinafter and claimed and is illus trated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the invention. Figure 2 is a detail view of the holder as it appears when detached from the handle or pole.
Referring to the drawings the letter A represents a band or sleeve of suitable material, preferably metal, of circular form and of proper size to slip easily upon the broom handle or pole of like cross sectional area. One edge of the band is serrated or provided with a series of pointed or saw teeth B. These teeth extend only about half way around the edge of the band, the edge of the other half remaining plain. A series of hooks 0 project laterally from the side of the band having the plain edge so that the teeth B and the hooks 0 stand relatively on opposite sides of the band thereby providing engaging points for the cloth on all sides of the band. The hooks enable loose ends of the cloth to be taken up when it is required to have a bulk of cloth for purposes of cleaning where a mere flirting of the cloth will not remove the dust. A bail D is'attached to the band by having its hooked ends fitted into openings in the sides thereof near the edge. By means of the bail the broom or other handle to which the device is applied is adapted to be suspended from a nail or other projection on the wall.
In using the device a pole or handle E is provided and may be a broom which is the most convenient article in a household for the purpose. The dusting cloth F is placed about the handle at one end and the band is slipped on the handle from the opposite end and moved over the end of the cloth with sufficient force to bind it upon the handle. The points entering the cloth hold it evenly distributed about the handle and prevent bunching of the fabric at any one side. \Vhen required the loose ends of the goods can be taken up and secured upon the hooks O to obtain a sufficient bulk of clothto effect cleaning by rubbing instead of flirting the said cloth.
\Vhen not in use the broom or handle can be hung up by means of the bail in the manner set forth.
The device herein specified is the preferred form but changes, such as varying the contour of the band may be made without departing from the nature of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States and claim as new is 1. The combination With a broom handle or pole and a dusting cloth,of aband encircling the said handle or pole and securing the cloth thereto having cloth engaging points, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
2. The herein described dusting cloth holder comprising a band, half of one edge being serrated or provided with saw teeth, and having hooks projecting laterally from the opposite edge, substantially as and for the-purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HANNAH O. NEAGLES.
