No5/15,102. Patented Aug. 27,1895.
UNrTnn STATES `PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID II. SLEEM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SURGICAL APPLICATOR.
SPCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,102, dated August 27, 1895.
Application filed November 7, 1894. Serial No. 528,148. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. SLEEM, a sub A' ject of the Sultan of Turkey, residingin New York city, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Surgical Applicator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new applicator for inserting in the vagina, or carrying to the mouth of the uterus in the vagina, medicines in a suitable form and medicated substances. By the use of this applicator themedicant can be inserted into the vaginal cavity and deposited in any desired locality therein without any irritation of the parts and with no ditliculty whatsoever; Its form and mechanism are such that would allow a patient to use it without the attendance of a physician.
The essential features of this invention will beparticularly hereinafter described, with the helpot' the accompanying illustration, and will be definitely indicated in the claims appended to this specification.
Figure 1 shows the side view of the applicator ready to receive the medicated substance. Fig. 2 is a central and transverse section through the applicator in the direction of its length, showing its internal component parts and mechanism. Fig. 3 is atransverse section of the mouthpiece of the applicator and a medicated cone, showing the manner in which said cone is ejected from the mouthpiece and held, in. sita, by the walls of the vaginal cavity. Fig. 4 represents a view of the mouthpiece receiving a medicated tampon and showing the twine to which it is fastened entering the core of the ejector of the applicator.
Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, 9 represents a tube of a cylindrical form and of proper length and thickness, made preferably of vulcanized rubber or any other suitable material, said tube having at one end and secured thereto, conveniently by screw-threads, the mouthpiece 7 ,and at the other or outer end is provided with flange 4. These three mentioned parts can be made, if desired, of one piece of material. The mouthpiece 7 is areceptacle for the healing-agent, and is made of such shape and form as is called for by the nature and use of the medicine. In Figs. l, 2, and 3 it is made of conical shape, with round smooth edges, polished surface, and convenient to receive a medicated cone, which can be made of various vehicles and impregnated with such, remedies as the case may demand. The vehicles, unless they be tampons, are given in their make a form similar to that of a section of a cone, for a reason herein specified.
In Fig. 4 the mouthpiece 7 is made with beveled edges similar to those of a cylindical speculum, to facilitate insertion, and of larger size to receive a tampon. The fiange 4 is provided with milled edge to insure a firm grasp in inserting the applicator and to facilitate unscrewing-a motion which the tube 9 is subjected to after'insertion, as hereinafter described.
5 is a movable rod with a longitudinal perforation 6 in its core, made preferably of vulcanized rubber or metal or any other suitable` material. It. acts as an ejector and [ills loosely the cavity of the tube 9, but preferably connected thereto by the screw-thread 2 at the end that carries the nut 4. The length of this screw-thread should equal lthe depth of the cavity of the mouthpiece, so that when the ejector is screwed home the cap 8, which is fastened to its extremity, shall be on the same level with the edge of the mouthpiece 7. This cap, which can be screwed or fastened to the ejector when placed in the latter position described, is given a shape similar to a thinrsection of a cone and provided with a hole in its center to communicate with the perforation 6 of the ejector 5. The ejectoris provided with the ring-handle 3 and with the groove 1, made along the length of the screwthread 2 to admit the air into the cavity of the mouthpiece 7, thus avoiding any suction on drawing out the applicator. The ejector 5 can be made of a tube with heavy walls, to which extremities can be fastened the ringhandle 3 and the cap 8 in the manner described. In inserting the cone 1l it is placed first in the cavity of the mouthpiece 7 when the ejector is in the position indicated by Figs. l and 2. yThen the applicator is held ICO by the nut 4 and tube 9 and introduced into the vagina, the same as a cylindrical speculum, but avoiding the rotation or turning of the handle 3 of the ejector. After the applicator has been introduced as far in the vaginal cavity as necessary, the index-finger, conveniently of the right hand, is inserted in the ring-handle 3, and with the thumb and middle linger on the nut 4; the tube 9, with the mouthpiece 7, is screwed out on the ejector, made stationary by the index-finger. By such movement it is evident that the mouthpiece of the applicator recedes from the cone, and the vaginal walls, by pelvis pressure, fall in and envelop the said cone, which, by vir tue of its shape, is held in the position and place in which it was deposited. The applicator then is simply drawn out. During the latter movement the air rushes in through the groove l and thus prevents the annoyance of suction.
In using the applicator for inserting tampons or other medicated substances which will have to be subsequently drawn out, the string 13, which is fastened to tampon 12, is passed rst through the hole in cap 8 continuously in the perforation of the ejector and out of the opening in the ring-handle 3. After inserting the applicator and screwing out the tube 9, after the manner previously described, it is drawn out, leaving the string 13 in the vagina hanging out to a sufficient length for the purpose of pulling out subsequently the tampon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vaginal applicator comprising` a tube, a hollow conical shaped mouth-piece, a movable rod or ejector contained within the tube, a threaded connection between the rod or ejector and the tube,a groove in said ejector acting as a vent, a cap secured upon one end, forming the bottom of the conical mouthpiece which is adapted to receive a medicated cone, substantially as described.
2. In a vaginal applicator comprising a tube, a hollow conical shaped mouth-piece attached thereto, said tube and mouth-piece being adapted to hold a movable rod or ejector contained therein, said ejector having a screwthread whereby it is adjusted with relation to the tube, a groove in the side of saidV ejector, said ejector also being hollow, and a cap fitting in the bottom of the said mouth-piece and fastened to the said ejector for the purpose and in the manner specified.
3. In a vaginal applicator, a tube provided with a cup-shape, beveled edge mouth-piece containing in its cavity a hollow plungerprovided at one end with a handle, said plunger being capable of being moved in and out of the outer tube, when desired, a vent or groove
