SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,048, dated October 29, 1895.
Application led May 3. 1895. Scria1No.54 8,026. (N o specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID BASGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nether Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nether garments, as trousers or knickerbockers; and it has for its object to provide novel 'means for-preventing the chaing, soreness, or irritation which is liable to occur, especially in such exercise or pursuits as riding a bicycle, a horse, or the like.
The invention consistsin the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a rear elevation of a nether garment. Fig. 2 is a section along a: Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a pad. Fig. 4 shows a modification. Fig. 5 is asection along y y, Fig. 4.
In the drawings is shown a nether garment having a pneumatic pad or seat. This pneumatic pad comprises the transverse portion l and the lateral portions or wings 2. A filling or access tube 3 enables the pad to be inflated or emptied, as desired.
The apparel-such, for example, as a pair of trousers or knickerbockers-has its seat portion 4 provided with a flap-piece 5 to form a pocket, the pad l 2 being housed in this pocket. The tube 3, being secured along the rear of apparel and extending to the Waistband, can serve for 'the ready inflation or col# lapsing of the pad, and when the apparel is being worn this tube 3, extending along the rear, will not be in position to annoy or interfere with the wearer. The tube 3, as well known, should have a valve for closing the outlet when the pad is to be kept inliated.
The lateral portions 2 of the pad, extending about the crotch portion of the apparel, will keep theinner faces of the thighs from chafing against one another or against a saddle or other object.
If it should not be desired to apply the pad to an outer garment, a supporter 6, Figs. 4 and 5, in drawers or trunk form, can be provided with the pad, and this supporter 6 can be put on before the outer apparel is put in place. Such a supporter 6 may be found useful with such a garment as a ladys skirt; but of course the supporter is not limited to use with a ladys skirt only. Neither is the application of the pad limited to use with trousers or knickerbockers, since it can be elsewhere applied--as, for example, in bloomers, jockeys trousers, and other articles.
For jockeys, where at times for reducing the weight a light or thinly-padded saddle is employed, the improved wearing-apparel will be found very satisfactory, and it may even serve for comfortable riding without a saddle, or bareback, as also with light or thinly padded saddles, which are preferred in warm weather for relieving the rider as well as the mount.
The tube 3, while shown extended along the back, can, if found convenient, be extended along to any other desired point, as at the side, the front, or the crotch, or in some casesas, for example, in permanent infiation-the tube can be omitted altogether and a valve applied directly to the pad.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A nether garment, provided at its seat portion with a pneumatic pad comprising a transverse portion and two lateral depending wing-portions, all constructed to fit the crotch= portion of the garment, substantially as described.
2. A nether garment, provided at its seatv portion with a flap to form a pocket and a pneumatic pad comprising a transverse portion and two lateral depending wing portions contained lin said pocket, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID BASCH. Witnesses:
WM. C. HAUFF, E. F. KAsTnNHUBER.
