BICYCLE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 562,140, dated Application filed January 15, 1896.

,e it known that l, ELIZABETH F. MeUAnr- NEY, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to garments which are colloquially termed bicycle-skirts, and it consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.

My invention will be understood by referriugtothe accompanyingdrawings,in which- Figure l. is a front perspective view of a garment embodying' my invention, the said view being broken away to clearly show the interiorconstruction thereof and also opened out or distended for the same purpose. Fig. 'l is a section on line 3 2 thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the garment, and Fig. t is a pattern of one of the duplicate scctions which constitute the garment.

Referring particularly to Fig. l, A is a side breadth or pattern of the garment. The top edge (t of this side breadth or pattern forms part of the waistot' the garment'. Contiguous to this edge are upper and side edges a' a, which, with other analogous edges of the other side breadth, form the crotch and the fly of the garment, as will be hereinafter set fort-h. Opposite to the top edge d of this breadth A is a lower ogee edge a2, which, when the brcadths are joined, as will be hereinafter set forth, forms the bottom of the garment. The edges o and o2 are joined by the radial edge fr", and the edges d. and ai are `joined by the notched edge ai. Contiguous to the side breadth A is the breadth or pattern B, which is shown as of the form of a quadrilateral of the general configuration of a truncated isos celos triangle, and forms with a similar breadth the bach breadth of the garment, as will be set forth. The upper edge 1J of this breadth is curved slightly, as is also the lower edge h.

lt will be observed that the portion C of the side breadth or pattern A, which is bounded by the upper edge a' and lower edge @and the steppe d edge u, is of less height than the main portion of the side breadth Abetween the edges o and u2, and constitutes a tongue or projection of the betteln of the side breadth A. This is clearly shown in Fig. 1,wherein it will be noted that this tongue C forms a tubular member with the side breadth A and constitutes a sort of trousers-leg. As will be observed, this trousers-leg extends upward only a short distance from the bottourof the garment, and serves te receive the leg of a wearer. This trousers-leg with the breadth l constitutes one half of the garment, the sido eurvededge ui being supplied with buttonholes forming one Inember of a ily, the other member being formed by an edge containing buttons, as will be hereinafter set forth.

The remaining half of the garment is constructed of a breadth ll' similar to l5, the two constituting the back breadth of the garment, as aforesaid, and a side breadth A' and tongue C', similar to the breadth and tongue A (l, the breadths A' and B' being joined by a seam 8, (see Fig. 2,) and the free edge b2 of the tongue C' being secured in this seam 3 in a similar manner to the tongue C. It will be observed that the two garment-sections are similar. The breadths B and B' are secured together by a back seam 2. (See Figs. 2 and 4.) The tongue C has an edge ai, (see Fig. 1,) which is provided with buttons a, cooperating with the buttonholes on the edge fof the breadth A to form a fly E (see Fig. l) to close the front of the garment. The tongue Ghas also an upper edge a7, which is sewed to the upper edge a' of the tongue C from the base 5 of the fly for a short distance rearwardly, say about to the point G of the said edge u, (see Fig. 2,) to form a crotch F, the remainder of the upper edges a' o7 between the point ti and the sea-ms 1 and 3 being free or unattached edges. Thus, when the tty is but ton ed up, the garment has in front the appearance of a divided skirt and is 'closed in the back. It has been found desirable, however, to supplement the appearance of the front of the garment by a supplementary section or apron D, which may be secured to the front of tbe garment by buttons ui* or other suitable fastenings. This supplementary section or apron is desirable when riding against a wind, in order to preserve the continuity of appear ance of the skirt. 'hen worn on the wheel,

the skirt will hang well without any unneeessai-y fullness to catch or draggle. This is especially desirable, for the reason that the motion of the crank will be free and unimpeded, the designed result being furthered by the fact that the tongues C C' being sewed into the baek of the skirt, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the knee rises it will earry with it the front leg or trousers portion and will thereby bring the lia-ek breadth forward as it moves, so that the knee action will serve to clear the skirt from the pedals, a highly desirable result.

\Vhat I claim: and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-

A bicycle-garment having the appearance of a combined skirt and trousersY closed at the back and divided in front, comprising a back breadth, combined side sections and trousers-legs secured thereto and forming the front of the garment, eomprising the sidr.` breadths A A', a tongue projecting from eat-h side breadth and extending upward from the bottom thereof for a portion onlyof the height of the said side breadths, and having their :5
