UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM THEODORE JOSEPH PARKES, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
BOOK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,056, dated June 30, 1896.
A li ti fil d December 12, 1895. Serial No. 571,925. (No model.) Patented in England J'une 1'7, 1895, No. 11,743.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM THEODORE Josnrn PARKES, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of 31 Store Street, London, England, have invented certain Improvements in Book-Holders or Desks, (for which I have obtained British Patent No. 11,743, dated June 17, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to reduce book-holders to the simplest portable form consistent with holding the book securely and satisfying all the requirements of the reader, and finally to manufacture it at a minimum price, all of which are advantages pointing to its general use by the public.
In order that my invention may be more clearly understood, I refer to the annexed drawings, in Which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my i1nproved book-holder in its unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bookholder folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective view to illustrate the manner of introducing a book into the book-holder. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 are perspective views illustrative of difierent ways of using the book-holder. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view showing a modification and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the book-holder shown in Fig. 6, omitting the book.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The letter 0 indicates a cross-piece having glued to its under side the lower side pieces h and to its upper side (see Figs. 1, 2, and 3) the upper side pieces Z. These upper side pieces Z form fingers or prongs. The nipples m are glued to the cross-piece a, space being left between the nipples and the fingers Z for the introduction of rubber bands or elastics 41, Figs. 2 and 3. Each nipple m is provided with a spring-clip cZ.
1The cross-piece c is provided with a hand e e.
Pivoted to the side pieces h are leaves 0, which can be turned out to supporting position, Fig. 1, for carrying the large or flexible book-covers.
To the side pieces 77/ is pivoted a frame 19 r p, and the upper ends 5 of the side pieces 12 of this frame, by striking against the leaves or blades 0, serve to arrest the frame 10 1" when unfolded orswung out in supporting position. The cross-piece of the frame 19 r is of such length as to prevent tipping of the support.
The covers of the book being slipped between the upper and lower side pieces Z h, as in Fig. 3, and the book-leaves made to rest on the upper side pieces Z, as in Fig. 5, such book-leaves can be readily turned While the book-covers are held by the side pieces h Z. The rubber bands n can be slipped about the book-covers, as seen in Fig. 4:, soas to keep the latter from accidentally slipping out from between the side pieces h Z.
\Vhen the book is opened at the desired page, the book-leaves can be held open by the clips d, which, when turned to rest over or press down onto an open leaf, will hold said leaf against turning. The book-support can then be held by the handle 6, as in Fig. 4, or placed on a window sill or ledge, or on the edge of a table, as in Fig. 5, or in the center of a table, as in Fig. 6, or it can be held over the face to enable the book to be read by a person in bed or in a reclining position.
The device can be made of any suitable material or materials, such as oak, ivory, ebony, or other substance or combination of substances.
When the book (shown in Fig. 6) is re moved, the device resting on a table appears as shown in Fig. 8, the frame 1) p r and the handle 6 resting on the table, and the supports 0r blades 0 extending from the side pieces it.
Having thus described my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, what I claim isl. A book-holder, consisting of a frame having two side pieces, a cross-piece made to connect the side pieces and provided with retaining-strips for the book-covers, leafholding springs attached to the cross-piece, and a handle, substantially as described.
2. A book-holder, consisting of a frame having two side pieces for supporting a book, a cross-piece made to connect the side pieces and provided with cover-retaining strips, springs made to bear on the pages or leaves, extensions connected to the side pieces, and a folding or collapsible support connected to said side pieces, substantially as described.
