DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,995, dated' August 4, 1896.
Serial No. 584,896. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM l'laYwooD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,Stat-e of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumpiiig-Y'Vagons, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specificationand accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a dumping-wagon which is provided with novel Ineans for raising the body thereof, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of a dumping-wagon embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan View of aportion thereof. Fig. 3 represents a transverse Vertical section thereof on line fo ft, Fig. l. Fig. 4 represents a horizontalsection of a portion on line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of a dumping-wagon, and B the running-gear thereof.
C designates ears which are secured to the under side of the `body A, and D designates an oscillating or swinging cross-head which is horizontally arranged and has its journals mounted in said ears C. Depending from and secured to said cross-head D is the vertically-arranged column E, whose lower end rests on the plate or table F, which is suspended from the chains or cords F', the latter being connected with the shafts G, whose bearings are on the plates H, connected with the runnin g-gear B, said shafts having keyed or otherwise secured to them the intermeshing gear-wheels J, one of which gears with the pinion K, on whose shaft is the crank or other handle L for rotating the same.
Connected with the cross-head D are arms M, which latter are mounted on the shaft N, to which are secured the toggle-levers P, one limb of each of which is jointed to the body.
Q designates asegment or quadrantwhich is attached to the shaft N and provided with a number of openings arranged in circular order to receive theV pin Q for locking the segment to the adjacent arm M.
R designates a lever which is secured to the shaft N and adapted for operating the same, so that when the body is raised it may be tilted or canted for dumping the load, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l.
Connected with the frame of the runninggear are the horizontally-arranged guides or guiding-plates S and T, through which freely passes the column E for steadying the latter in its rising and falling motions and preventing lateral strain thereon.
The operation is as follows: The handle L is rotated, whereby, owing to the gearing K J, the shafts G are rotated, thus winding the chains F on said shafts and thereby raising the table F. This elevates the column E, and consequently the body A, after which the body is tilted, canted, or inclined by the operation of the lei-fer R, so that the load may be dumped.
If desired, the body after being raised may be turned to either side, after which it may be inclined, as in the previous case, the column in turning being supported on the plate F.
When the body is returned to its horizontal position by the operation of the lever R, the gearing is operated to permit or cause the body to lower and so return toits seat on the running-gear.
lVhere it is not desired to have the column turn on the plate F, the latter may be fixed to the column and form ears for the attachment of the chains F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ism
l. ln a dumpingwagon, a body having an oscillating cross-head jonrnaled thereon, a
depending column connected with said crosshead, a plate supporting said column, shafts mounted on the frame of the runnin gegear of said wagon, meshing gearing on said shafts, chains connected with said plate and shafts, and means for rotating said shafts, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. In a dumping-wagon, a body,V a column depending therefrom, a table on which said y column is freely rested, chains carrying said table, means on the running-gear for raising said chains and means on the running-gear for guiding said column, substantially as described.
3. Abody having an. oscillating cross-head IOO mounted thereon, a column depending from said cross-head, a table on which said column is rested, chains carrying said table, shafts on which said chains may be Wound, said shafts being mounted on the running-gear, and means for rotating said shafts, substantially as described.
4. In a dumping-Wagon, a body having an Oscillating cross-head jonrnaled in ears thereon, a depending column swiveled to said crosshead, shafts journaled on the frame of the running-gear of said Wagon, a plate supporting said column, chains connected to said plate and shafts, meshing gearing on said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts, said parts being combined substantially as described.
5. In a dumping-Wagon, a body having an oscillating crossdlead journaled thereon, a
depending column connected with said crosshead, a plate engaging said column, chains adapted to carry said plate, and means for Winding said chains, arms rigidly connected with said crosshead, a shaft journaled in said arms, toggle-levers each having one limb rigidly connected with said shaft and the other limb connected With said body, a segment rigidly connected with said shaft and provided With a series of openings for a loci;- ing-pin, adapted to enter either of said openings, and an opening in one of said arms, and means for rotating said shaft, said parts being combined substantially as described.
