PATENTl ()Fricn 'l CHARLES M. D. BARON, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
SANITARY PAI L.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 567,446, dated September 8, 18796. Application illed May 7, 1896. Serial No. 590,585. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern:
` Be it known that I, CHARLES M. D. BARON, of New York city, in the countyand State of New York, have invented a new andV useful Improvement in Sanitary Fails, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The especial object of my invention is to improve upon Vthe construction of the pail for which Letters Patent were granted to me September 20, 1892, No. 483,036, the improvements being such as to greatly economize in the cost f 'manufactura and to provide a cover for an ordinary pail which will fit thereto in an air-tight manner and which may be expeditiously and conveniently secured in place through the medium of the bail of the pail.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the various parts of the cover that it may be quickly and accurately placed in position on the pail, .and whereby each and every part of the cover will be light, yet strong, and, furthermore, to so construct the handle on the bail of the pail that it will of itself act as a locking-roller for the cover and be made practically in one piece.V
The invention consists in the novel construction andcombination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,-
and pointedA out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of theimproved sanitary pail and its cover. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover and pail. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 through the marginal portion of the cover and the upper marginal portion of the pail and illustrating the cover as slightly lifted from the pail. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the handle for the pail, vthe section being taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a section taken through one of the supports for the locking device, the said section being taken practically on the line 6 G of Fig. 3.
ln carrying out the invention the pail A handle is made in one piece, as shown inFig.l
5,'being provided at its exterior central portion with an annular rib 11, the said rib b eing covered by a band 12 of metal or other material of a hard character, so as to provide a roller at the central portionof the'handle, integral therewith. y
The cover D is given any necessary. shape to lit the top of the pail. The cover is provided with the usual downwardly-extending inner flange 13, as shown in Fig. 2 and inFig. 4, and inaddition to the downwardly-extending flange 13Y a marginal angular flange 14 is also formed upon the cover, comprising a horizontal and a vertical member. Between the marginalflange 14 and the inner flange 13 of the cover a cushion 15 is secured, which is preferably made of rubber and is tubular, as is particularly shown in Fig. 4. The cushion is so placed that when the cover is placed inv position in the top of 'the pail the cushion will bear upon the upper marginal rim 16 of the pail, as illustrated in Fig. 2,and by forcing the cover downward and holding it in such position an air-tight connection is eifected between the cover and the pail.
The cover may be quickly removed by simply carrying the hand'lefrom engagement therewith and lifting the cover from the pail.
The arms 17 may be in less number or inf greater number than illustrated, and theyv are made as light as possible consistent with. strength, being usuallymadefrom thin metal, and they arewider at'the bottom thany at the top, being strengthened byi a central lortgi-, tudinal rib 17, generally made by striking up the. metal.
Under this construction ,i t is obvious that, an: ordinary;5 pailA maybe f provided r withy an;
rhaminimumof cost, andthat all the fparrts' ofjthefcover, ,together with the, lookin-gir del-vv Vice,-z ue, .exceedingly light durable, andsimfple, and`4 Within thefunderstandingof anyfper son-Vuoi?,y ordinary intelligence.,
Having; thus, deseribed my, invention, g 1i claim,..as= ne w. and desire` to. secure. byfLetters Pai/611137@ l. The combination Withfavessehabail' therefor, ,and handle Vloosely mounted on 1sadbailandprov-idedwitl acentral annular rib.` :hailing ahard 1:outerfsllrfaeef,f of a cover. V fitted vto saidilvessel Aprovided, with armsgcon- Y- i ve`rgii 1,g over its center, andai conical tabley suppplltedlbysad.arms-havinganfuppercon- Y cavesurface, saidta-ble beingarranged tobe;
engaged by said annular rib, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a vessel, a bail therefor, and a handle mounted to turn on said 'bail being provided with a projecting an- 4o nular rib, of a cover, provided with an overhanging marginal flange', a second iiange within the marginal flange and extending be- .low the; same, a tubular cushion located between the overhanging marginal iiang'e and 45 ythe inner flange, arranged to en gage with the ,mouth of a vessel to which the coveris applied,
a conical'tab'le provided with a dishedupper surface located over-the central portion of the cover, and supports attached to the said cover 5o yand to the said table, thetablebeing'vv adapted to receive said ribvfhereby the' coverisi locked ion-said vessel ,asand forth@ purposespe'eiiied.. 1 airetightcover and a, locking,device therefor i 3;. Thecombination with a vesse-La'nda bail therefor, ,oiia cover ii-tted to said :vessel hav; 5 5 Iing tripodal -arms.thereonf,-a conical table sup'- Fported over the center of the cover on said# arms and ,havin-g .an upper.,Y concave-surface, ,and a Lone-p-iecehand-le. mountedto Y turn: .on saidrbail and. 1 having-a centralt-annullar'- rib 6o formed .with a@ hard outer surface, said ri babe lgin-gxarrangedto -mofveup` the-inclined surface'- of said 4table and en ter upen-y th'e' concave' face lthereo when the-f .bail @is,--`carried Vupward-,-Y asf. and for l the purpose specified..
