NECK-PROTECTOR.

Be it known that I, EDMUND E. CARLTON, a citizen of Great Britain, and a resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neck-Protectors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specifcation.

This invention relates to improvements in neck-protectors especially well adapted for use by barbers, dentists, and surgeons for the purpose of protecting the neck against hairclippings when used by barbers, and also for preventing the soiling of the garments while shaving or performing dental or surgical operations, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein*Y Figure l represents a top plan view of the invention, and Fig. 2 represents an enlarged cross-section on the curved line 2 2 shown in Fig. l.

Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.

The invention consists of a flexible watervproof shield, bib, or protector A, preferably made of rubber. It may be of any suitable size, form, or shape, according to the purpose for which it is to be used. For barbers purposes it may be made substantially of a circular shape, as shown in Fig. 1, but for dental and surgical purposes it may be made somewhat enlarged in front or rear, as may be desired, without departing from the essence of my invention. The waterproof elastic shield A has a circular neckopening B, adapted to encompass the neck or other portion of the person to be operated upon. The said shield is radially slitted at C, as shown, and is preferably provided at this point with reinforcing-strips C' C', as shown' in Fig. l. In practice I also prefer to make a similar reinforcing-strip b around the edge of the circular neck-opening B, as shown in Fig. l.

D D are non-elastic reinforcing segmental pieces secured between the elastic shield A and waterproof covering-strips E at the junction of the circular neck-openingB and slitted portion C, as shown in Figs. l and 2. Said non-elastic reinforcing-pieces D D are provided With perforations d CZ d, adapted to receive a stud or hook F, by means of which the slitted portion of the shieldAis fastened, adjusted, and closed around the neck or other portion of the body when in use. By means of said reinforcing non-elastic pieces D D great strength is imparted to the shield at the place where its edges are to be fastened together, thus preventing its being torn or abraded at such point.

Vhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is* The herein-described elastic and waterproof shield or neck-protector A having a cir cular neck-opening B, a radially-slitted portion C, non-elastic segmental reinforcingpieces D, D, secured to the shield A about the neck-opening B .upon each side of the radially-slitted portion C and each provided with a plurality of perforations d for the reception of a fastening device, and waterproof covering-strips E secured over the reinforcing-pieces D, D, substantially as shown and described.
