HENRY E. SOHVAB, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
BOTTLE-LABEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,494, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed Tune 9, 1896. Serial No. 594,809. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. SCHWAB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means and Methods of Labeling Bottles and Similar Vessels, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to a novel means anc method of labeling bottles, demijohns, dre.; and it consists of a combination of marks and labels and the method of applying the same in such a manner that the vessel cannot without detection be used a second time and for another purpose than that for which it was originally intended.
To this end I form a label in the manner hereinafter described and in connection with it arrange a slip of blank paper of the same or of different color or forni than that of the label and of less width than the label, the parts being attached to each other at the outer edges of the slip and in such a manner that when affixed to the bottle or other vessel that portion of the label immediately over the slip will not adhere to the bottle, thus enabling the label itself to be scalped or mutilated, thereby destroying same and preventing dishonest reuse.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, the figure therein shown represents a bottle with my invention applied.
In the drawing, A represents a bottle, and B a label secured thereto by paste or muoilage. This label has a slip or supplementary portion O, which can be seen where the facing of the former is cut away to illustrate this feature. This slip or supplementary portion of the label extends over the entire rear surfacebetween the lines D and E. At F and G I show dotted lines which indicate the line of cut or separation hereinafter referred to. Threads T, slightly protruding, may be secured along the dotted line F G between label B and slip O, whereby the removal of the c oupon can be facilitated. The label B and the slip or semibacking O are secured to each other between the lines d f and g c. Between the lines f and g, however, the parts B and O are not attached. Upon the part C, I print or otherwise mark the price at which the bottle containing the particular liquid is to be sold at retail, and I prefer to blow into, or I may otherwise mark upon the glass of, the bottle itself the same figure, so that the bottle when vended will display upon its own face the vending-price, and the slip or supplementary label will have affixed to it the tallying iigures.
The face of the label contains, in a central portion and between the lines F G, the name of the brand of the liquid in the bottle, the trademark, and also, if desired, a serial number. To the left of this, and between the line F and the left-hand end of the label, may be printed a guarantee and a statement of the qualities of the liquid in the bottle, and upon the righthand end of the label may be placed directions and notice in reference to the fraudulent use, instructions in reference to the removable portion of the label, and also may be placed the serial number of the label, whieh corresponds with the serial number upon the central portion of the label. When the bottle is sold by the retailer, the vendee, following the instructions upon the label, by separating it at the lines F and G, secures a coupon redeemable for a valuable consideration.
As a further protection, and to enhance the advertising value of this label, I may place upon the back of the coupon lines for name and address with directions as to redemption of same.
By means of this improved label Iam enabled to prevent fraudulent reusage of the bottle or other vessel and am venabled to guarantee the liquids thus vended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a bottle having a price marked on, a label divided into an upper and a lower leaf affixed to each other as shown, the lower and inner leaf having a mark tallying with the mark upon the bottle and the up# per leaf having its ends aflixed to the bottle,
its middle portion being free so as to be removable and constituting a coupon, as set forth.
