B. I-IEFTYE. SPRING HEEL.
No. 581,661. Patented Apr. 27, 1897.
UniTEn flTATEs BIRGER IIEFTYE, OF TUXPAN, ME
XICO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 FRANCIS ALFRED ECKARD, OF SAME PLACE.
SPRING-HEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,661, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed June 29, 1896. Serial No. 597,432. (No model.)
To all whom if; may concern/x Be it known that I, BIRGER HEFTYE, a citizen of the Republic of Mexico, and a resident of Tuxpan, in the Province of Vera Cruz and Republic of Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Heels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spring-heels for boots and shoes, and is more particularly designed for the use of railway employees who are compelled to stand during the running of the cars.
It is well known to those familiar with railway matters that the vibration of the cars while in motion has an injurious effect upon the feet of those employees who are compelled to stand for a greater part of the time when employed; and the object of the present invention is to provide a spring-heel which will yield to the vibrations of the car and thus obviate any annoyance or injurious effects which would otherwise be caused by such vibrations.
The invention consists, essentially, of a metal shell comprising a plate of the general contour of the heel portion of a shoe, adapted to be secured to the sole and provided with a downwardly-extendin g flange at the edges, a correspondingly-formed plate with an upwardly-extending flange telescoping therein, and a series of springs interposed between said plates and means for securing said plates or sections together, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a shoe provided with my improved heel. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the two sections composing the heel detached from each other and from the shoe. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the heel detached, showing ice-creepers connected therewith.
In the said drawings, the reference-n umeral 1 designates a shoe of any ordinary or suitable construction. The numeral 2 designates the inner or upper heel-section, consisting of a metal plate of the contour or shape of the sole at the heel, and provided with a series of screw-threaded apertures 3, through which pass screws 4, which also pass through the sole and serve to hold the section in place.
The n umeral 5 design ates the lower or outer section, of the same general form as the section 2, consisting of a metal plate 6 and an upwardly-extending flange 7. which fits or telescopes in section 2, as seen in Figs. 1 and interposed between these sections are springs of any suitable construction, coiled springs 8 being shown in the present instance. The ends of the screws 4 pass into the upper ends of the springs to hold them in place. The flanges of the lower section 5, at the front and rear, are formed with an aperture 9 for the passage of headed screw 10, which also passes through elongated slot 12 in the flange of section 2. This screw holds the section 5 to section 2, yet permits it to move up and down to a limited extent.
The numeral 13 designates screw-threaded pins, (see Fig. 3,) which engage with corresponding apertures in section 5, and serve as ice-creepers. v
I generally employ to u r springs between the sections 2 and 5, but more or less may be employed, according to the weight of the person.
The improved heel may be applied to boots now in use by knocking off the leather heels thereon and securing the former thereto, as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination in a spring-heel for a boot or shoe, of the inner section consisting of the plate provided with a series of screwthreaded apertures, and the flange having elongated slots, the lower section comprising the plate having a flange telescoping with the flange of the upper section, the headed screws passing through said slots and secured to the flange of the lower section, the coiled springs interposed between said sections, and the screws passing through said upper section and engaging with the upper ends of said springs, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a boot or shoe, the heel-section comprising the plate having a ICO series of screw-threaded apertures and the tion and engaging with screw-threaded aperfiange having an elongated slot, and the tures in the movable section; substantially headed screws passing through the sole and as described. through said apertures, of the movable sec- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as l5 5 tion comprising the plate having a flange enmy own I have hereunto affixed my signature gaging with the flange of the upper section, in presence of two Witnesses. the coiled springs interposed between said 7 r T 1 sections and the said screws engaging with BIRGER HEF F1 the upper ends thereof, the screw-threaded lVitnesses: 10 pins or creepers, and the headed screws pass- I.
