VENTILATED HAT. N0. 585,186, Patented June 29, 1897.
WITNESSES v INVEIIT nrahnm r 13 STATES DAVID CROSS, OF TIMPERLEY, ENGLAND.
ENTlLATED HAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,186, dated- June 29, 1897.
A li ati an November 20,1896. sennuo. 612,800. (NomodeL) T a 207mm may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID Cnoss, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and aresident of: Stockport Roarl,.li1nperley, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new 5 id useful Improvements in Ventilated flats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawin gs,forniing a part thereof, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to stiff 'hats, and particularly to derby hats; and the object thereof is to provide an improved means for ventilating the same.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyng drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a derby hat provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a similar view showing a modified form of'const'ruction, and Fig. 3 a bottom plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings forming part of this specincation the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of refer-' once, and in the practice thereof -1 provide an ordinarystiff or derbyhat, which is provided with the usual brim '6, and I also form in the top thereof a number of small perforations or openings 7, and, in the construction shown in 1, I place over these openings a de-' Hector 8, which is composed of felt or any preferred material, and between the edges thereof and the top of the crown of the hat are small openings or passages 9, any desired number of which may be employed.
The hat shown in Fig. 1. is also provided with the usual sweat-band 10, whichis composed of leather or any preferred material, and formed therein, in the base thereof, at regular intervals are perforations or openings 11, through which the air passes, and the ha .ll is provided at its upper edge with a wire ring, as shown at 12, which lolds the upper edge thereof inwardly from the base of the crown of the hat in such manner as to form an annular space 13. and formed in the base of the crown or near the base thereof are small perforations or openings 14, through which the air passes into said space, and the air also passes upwardly into said space through the perforations or openings 11 in the bottom of the band 10 and into the crown of the hat. The band 10 is also provided at regular intervals with pads 15, which are composed of felt or any preferred material and preferably extend from ,near the upper to near the lower edge of the band, and in the construction shown in Fig. 2 the deflectingplate 8 is placed on the inside of the crown,
and formed between the edges thereof and the top of the crown are the openings 9,into and through" which the air passesas it leaves the crown. .In this form of construct-ion the sweat-band 10 is secured within the base of the crown in the usual manner, and secured I thereto at regular intervals are the pads 15, any desired number of which may be employed, and these pads, as hereinbefore set out, may be composed of felt or any preferred material.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 2 and'3 the air passes upwardly into the crown of the hat through the spaces betweenthe pads 15, and, as will be understood, in either form of the construction herein shown and described I provide ample means for introducing air into the crown of the hat at the base thereof.
My invention may be applied to any desired form or style of hat; and,
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 1. A hat, of the character described, having a perforated crown, secured to which is a-deflector having openings formed between the same and the hat-crown and a sweat-band provided with perforations along its lower edge and a wire band along its upper edge to draw thetop of the same inwardly and pads secured to the out-er surface of said band, substantially as shown and described.
2. A hat of the character described having a perforated crown, secured to which and ex tending over the said perforated portion is a deflector having openings formed between the same and the hat-crown, and a sweatence of the subscribing witnesses, this 26th band provided with pads which are secured day of June, 1396. to the surface of said band, and having means whereby the upper edge of the sweat-band is drawn inwardly for the purpose set forth. \Vitnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ARTHUR (i. HALL, my invention I have signed myname, in pres- JOHN \V. THOMAS.
DAVID CROSS.
