J. H. STAUBBR; PUZZLE.
No. ;a -1,508. Patented Oct. 12, 18971 &gg .1.
%ita/wwe@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPI-I H. STAUBER, oFo'sBoRm MISSOURI.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,508, dated October 12, 1897. Application filed February 3, 1897. Serial No. 62l,832. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concerns ,Be 'it known that I, J OSEPH H. STAUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osborn, in the county of De Kalb and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention -relates to puzzles; and the object is to produce a toy that will be pleasing and interesting' to both young and old.
' With this object in View the invention consists of certain features of Construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fullydescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of my improved puzzle, showing the balls or shot in the act of dropping from one pocket to another; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the back of the puzzle, which may be either transparent or opaque; 2, the transparent front; 3, the disk from which the pockets are stamped; 4, the encircling clamping-band, and 5 the balls or shot.
The disk is provided with two or more radial pockets, and i n this instance is shown as provided with five pockets a, b, c, d, and e, arranged to form a five-ponted star. These pockets are formed by five sectors a' b' c' d' e', the points of which are provided with heads (1 b 0 dtand 6 which are preferably, but not necessarily, circular in form.
Any Construction of head may be employed that will contract the entrances (20 17 0 d and 6 ofthe pockets, and hn'ce I do not wish to be restricted to. the form of heads herein shown anddescribed,
In playing the game the object is to manipulate the puzzle so that the balls or shot will move from one pocket to one of the others.
By referring to Fig. l it will be noticed that the shot in rolling out of the socket b around the head b will fall against the head c some falling into the pocket c and some falling into the pocket d. Should it be attempted to roll the shot from one pocket to a pocket diametrically opposite, a greatdeal of skill must be displayed, because one of the heads is arranged directly opposite the throat of each pocket and the shot will strike said head and will almost invariably fall into the pockets on each side of the head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-` 1. A puzzle comprising pockets having contracted throats formed by heads which are of greater'breadth than the entrance of said *pockets, the entrance to one pocket being diametrically opposite to the head of another pocket and movable bodies adapted to pass from one pocket to the other, substantially as set forth.
2. A puzzle comprising a back, a transparent front or face, 'an interposed disk formed with a series of annularly-arranged pockets having contracted throats formed by circular heads, the breadth of which is greater than the width of the throats, and the throat of one pocket being diametrically opposite the head of another pocket, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
