SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 595,636, dated December 14, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HUGO KI'JHNERT, a citizen of the Kingdom of Prussia, and a resident of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Globe Covers and Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates more particularly to pendent lamps for illuminating and ornamental purposes and is especially suitable for decorating show-windows and Christmas trees.

The object of my invention is to provide the globe with a cover which will produce not only a highly-ornamental efiect, but also serve as a protection against breakage, and also serve to equalize the temperature, as will here inafter appear.

My invention consists in providing a lampglobe, preferably of colored glass, which will contain and conceal the lamp or illuminator, and an outer cover for said globe comprising a netting of laminated metal or wires tangled together to form a network around the lampglobe and thus protect the glass of the globe from breakage, but also give to the globe a rich glistening cover.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a simple form of lamp-globe protected with a wire-netting; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the form shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a vertical section of a novel and preferred form of globe especially adapted to hold a candle for Christmas-tree and other decorations.

The glass body or globe A may be pot-shaped, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to contain a lamp or candle, the latter being centrally set within the cup at at the bottom of the globe, and a wire cord B, secured to a metal ring b, held around the neck a of the globe, serves to suspend the globe. The globe is covered with a network or mat of laminated wire tangled to provide a metal cover 0 of bright, glistening, and frosted appearance, loosely inclosing the globe and serving to conduct the heat equally over the surface thereof and distribute it from any overheated portion of the globe to the lessheated portion thereof, and which will also serve largely as a protection against break $erial N0- 62'7,613. age, and should the said globe be broken by any means the net or cover 0 will hold the globe together and prevent the pieces from falling to the fioor.

The wire may be made of German silver in V small threads or of finely-laminated ribbons crimped and crinkled to form a mat of glistening multidiverging sections.

The lamp is preferably formed in a novel manner with a globular body portion A, surmounted by a hood extension B, preferably silvered upon its inner surface I) and having an aperture 1) upon the side near the top of the hood for ventilation and for the heat generated by the lamp to escape from the globe.

The globe is provided with a neck a, and the metal ring I), surrounding the said neck, may also hold the margin of the laminatedwire mat, the contracted portion or neck of the globe, however, providing ample means for securely holding the mat upon the globe. The mat covers the globe closely and is of sufficient thickness to protect it completely against any blows which may come upon it. The light passing through the colored glass of the globe and shining through the bright many-sided surfaces of the tangled mat will appear as a luminous iridescent mantle upon the globe.

The globe may be partly filled with oil or water and a small float-light held therein, as a candle properly supported in the water or a Wick supported in the oil.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an article of manufacture, an illuminating-lamp adapted to be hung from any suitable support comprisinga glass globe open at or near the top, a neck, a hanger and a mat of laminated metal, threads embracing the body of the globe to the neck, and tangled together to completely cover the globe to protect and give to the globe an iridescent or glistening cover, substantially as described.
