SPECIFIATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,219, dated February 15, 1898. Application filed July 3, 1897. Serial No. 643,412. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. BUNKER, of Natielnin the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in paper bags, and has more particular relation to securing devices for the same.
The invention consists of .the combination, with a bag proper, of a securing-piece having approximately the shape of a hollow triangle, with one end secured to one side of the mouth of the bag and the other end provided with glue, whereby it may be secured to the opposite side after the bag has been filled and folded.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a bag constructed according to m yinvention before closing Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the bag filled and closed.
1 in the drawings represents the bag, and 2 the sealingpiece. The bag 1 is preferably constructed of paper in any ordinary manner. The securing-piece 2 is also preferably constructed of paper and has approximately the form of a hollow triangle, formed at one end with an enlarged head. One side of this sealing-piece is secured to the side of the bag 1 by gluing or pasting, so that the remaining portion of the sealing-piece may extend over the top of the bag and be secured down upon the opposite side after the bag has been filled and closed. The enlarged head 3 is coated upon its under side with a suitable glue, so
that when moistened it may be secured down to the bag proper. By the peculiar structure of my bag I provide two bands extending over the top of the bag after the same is closed, said bands effectively preventing the opening of the mouth of the bag by binding the material closely down at independent points in proximity to theedges of the bag. This structure is particularly desirable for bags containing sugar, flour, and other finely-pulverized material and eltectually prevents the escape of such material from the ends of the bag, as would be the case were a single strip employed passing over the middle of the top. The peculiar triangular structure also lends strength to the securing-piece and prevents it being accidentally torn. Lastly, the peculiar triangular structure permits of the two securing-bands being passed over the top of the bag and both secured down in position by a single glue-coated attaching-head, and as the two bands are united by the base of the triangle the securing device as a whole may be attached to the bag by a single opera tion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a bag or receptacle, of a securing-piece having approximately the form of an open triangle, and secured along the base of the triangle to one side of the mouth of the receptacle and gummed upon one side of the opposite end or apex of the triangle, whereby it maybe secured to the opposite side of the mouth of the receptacle, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a bag, of an open triangular securing-piece attached along its base to one side of the mouth of the bag and provided at its apex with an enlarged gummed head adapted to be secured to the opposite side of the mouth of the bag, substantially as described.
